I did get a little laptop with win 10 so that I could see websites that required the latest versions of things, and just to keep up with what is going on. However...

What do I do to keep this narcissistic twit of an operating system from trying to grab focus while I am in the middle of doing something that doesn't involve bowing down and sucking its ... wonderfulness.

I'll be typing along and an update will have indigestion and demand immediate focus. I do [ESC] and sometimes it shuts up, other times it brings up the whine screen and then I have to exit out of it before I can do anything.

Please tell me how to make this behave.

Update on this. I have the notifications set so it shouldn't demand focus, but it is back again with a blue notification overlay "Can't install Windows Updates" whenever it feels like it, which then goes on to open the update screen. It isn't just me - one of the guys at tech-tv recently complained that he had his setting set so there shouldn't be an issue, and Windows decided to do an update right in the middle of when he was on-air using the computer for his show.

I suspect that this will come back and bite MS on the a**. At some point, somebody will be running a life-critical app that ceases to function because of this nonsense, and somebody will die. MS has done a lot of stuff in the past that was problematic, but this is beyond that.

A life-critical app on a home computer? Like what?

^ dream on. It has been out for over a year. No change.

Regarding critical infrastructure, keep in mind that enterprise additions have more control over updates.

Windows + R
type gpedit.msc
hit enter
go down to automatic updates and disable it.

Need Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise/Educational as you need access to group policies which aren't included in home editions.

First, consider that not all people are fully able.

Second, consider how home automation is increasingly gaining headway.

As a possible example, something as simple as an automatic thermostat control for a bedridden person could default to "no heat". Monitoring systems and security could fail, allowing an intruder. I'm not going to bother to bring up more examples of possibilities, as I suspect this could turn into a religious debate with believers in the potential problem and non-believers. If you can't see it, fine.
