We have 6 of the HP 23 tri-color cartridges. All have one common issue. None will print yellow and they all print red. Anyone know if the amount of each of the three colors (red, yellow, blue) are equal in these cartridges? You buy one and run out of yellow and have to but another one.
We have had good success refilling black but the color are tricky due to the sponge like material in each of the three compartments inside the cartridge.
Used to refill, but got tired of the mess. bought a printer that has a separate cartridge for each color. And not an HP, who has perfected the profit model of expensive ink.

We tried it several times with different printers and always the same result, error messages. We finally decided to get a new printer with wifi and checked cartridge prices and availability at Costco for them, and went with the HP Envy 4500, cartridges are only $16 for black, about double that for tricolor so we buy them new rather than refill. We don't print that much, though any more. That printer seems to be pretty good, and it's nice to be able to print from an i-pad or smartphone from anywhere in the house or even outside.

Tri-color cartridge ............ any issues with one color running out before the others did?
The tri-color seems to not be the best way. One color or the other runs dry and the whole cartridge is ruined.
I've never tried refilling HP cartridges, mostly because their heads don't last long enough to do so. I just throw them out after spending to much time trying to fix the problems (printing only one color, faults, etc).
and people used to drill and fill laser cartridges, too.
I met a man when I was running the computer systems for a large corporation who had just started a refill business. I had him talk to my manager and we hired him to refill carts for all our HP printers (a lot of 1200 series then). That was about 25 years ago and as far as I know he's still filling them.
