I have a work computer and a iPod, and a ****ty dell I just got that is so slow it's unusable. I was thinking of just not getting another, but I don't want to use my work computer for things like porn, downloading movies illegally, personal photos, personal data, Etc. although I could just keep this stuff on USB. What are your thoughts on this?
Don't risk using work computer for personal stuff..... even if benign/innocent.
I know a person who kept everything on his work laptop and didn't get a chance to copy/wipe personal data before he got terminated. Fortunately, he was good friends with the person in IT and that person copied/wiped personal stuff on his behalf. He was able to get his personal stuff sent to him.
Not to mention that you can be violating workplace rules as well as being tracked.
Low end PCs and Laptops are cheap these days.... should be enough for your personal web consumption. I would even guess a Chromebook with SD card slot for extra storage would be enough. My Acer was only $125 on sale.
My last job had a shared laptop meant for travel that one guy used for a long time. You would not believe the stuff he left behind, including job hunting letters. I've also run into interesting stuff on shared drives (early versions of cloud?) that did not have decent security between/among users. Learned what bonuses colleagues got since the number two guy left all that on the shared drive.
You only have 30 days to return it, and you have to pay a restocking fee. I just sent it in to Dell to "get repaired." Don't get a Dell.
There is no brand in existence that doesn't turn out a bad unit at one time or another.
