I bought both a modem and a router, setup and connected the modem and the router, then tried removing one of the cables from the telephone module and connecting it to the router to active the port. That failed... (though the wireless is working...)
What is the correct way to setup/activate the ports? We had to pay extra to get the pre-wiring so I would really like to be able to use it, especially since my family won't have to fight for the wifi
Since just plugging the wire that goes just to the jack didn't work, you might have to redo the ends if they set it up just for telephones.
You'll be bypassing that module.
First thing is to verify that just plugging your computer straight into the modem work. Disable wifi on the computer. Once verified, you know it is the wiring.
Start with a cheap line tester. Insten® POTHRJ45TST1 Cable Tester For RJ45/RJ11 Cables | Quill.com
If it was setup just for telephone, just the middle 2 pairs or wires may be hooked up. You'll probably have to repunch down the keystone. There are toolless keystores you can buy.
yea seems they wired your house but didnt do it for net, did it for phones. If you can post any pictures on how it was wired to the wall and the wiring, that will help us alot to help you. You can still have basic dial tone line and have net on the same cat5e. Just needs to be wired correctly for this to work. Net uses orange and Green, Basic dial tone you can use blue or brown unless it is VOIP/POE than you cant.
Call the build er. And make sure you understand what you paid for. The builder should not leave you in a lurch like this, if you paid for CAT5 and aren't sure you have it. No doubt the builder sub-contracted, but he knows who and what.
Why pay long distance guessing games here, when answers are no doubt closer and more accurate?
I e-mailed them and they said it's the right box... but then again, they also told me that the uneven flooring in one of my rooms is "standard"... so...I am inclined to not trust them

Uneven flooring? You better get someone to inspect your house. Ugh, I am soo lucky my husband knows everything I think he is Mcgyver. That I don't need untrustworthy contractors. He knows how to work those connections by himself.
But like someone said, they better make your wiring work, They installed it, then make them connect your internet.
As for their reply that it's the right box, what does it even have to do with anything? Also whoever is your internet subscriber don't they usually connect everything for you too? And not leave until you are satisfied with the connection?
It will be interesting to find out from the installer how he expected a "passive" device intended for voice telephone use, to work in place of an "active" device (hub or switch) to distribute Ethernet 10-BaseT computer wiring.
Just because the plugs/jacks are 8-pin modular, and the cable is Cat5 is not the whole story.
Unless the installer thought he only needed to pre-wire for telephones.
OP, what is the other end of the cable plugged into the "Service In" jack connected to ?
And are the other cables labeled as to what rooms they go to ?
Again, you need to learn what the installer installed. You also need to know what you contracted for (should be in your purchase agreement) and what the builder had the installer do. It's possible that you never had an agreement to wire the house with CAT5. It is also possible you need to lawyer up.
TM-1045 is intended for telephone use. What were you expecting? Pre-wired CAT5 data throughout the house?
