I purchased a new computer back in November. Naturally, it has Windows 10 and Windows Defender on it. I've always used Avast and Malwarebytes and so my natural inclination was to install it again, which I've done.
Looking at Defender now, the firewall is up and running, but the antivirus itself seems to be off. Under Defender, I have a button that says "Turn on Windows Defender antivirus".
So my questions are, as long as I have Avast and Malwarebytes, do I need to turn on Defender? Or should I leave it off? Or should I uninstall Avast and Malwarebytes and turn on Defender?
You should never run two antivirus products at the same time. It's true that Avast is fine, but Defender is built in. I've been using it on multiple computers for several years with good results. Of course no antivirus product can protect you completely from unsafe browsing/email habits. Safe use is perhaps the best thing you could learn.
I used to have Avast and Malwarebytes and always disabled the rather flaky Defender back in the days of 7 and 8.1
However, I have been hugely impressed with the latest incarnation of Defender, and rather disappointed with the constant bloatware that comes with Avast. So much so I disabled and uninstalled it, and reactivated Defender, alongside MBytes.
Defender certainly feels more on the ball detecting attacks in real-time more than the latest versions of Avast. Plus, Defender is a delight to use and doesn't hog sys. resources in quite the same way Avast does/did.

I was tired of the ads so switched to Defender. It has worked well.
When you say "ads" do you mean those things that come on and say, "How about updating Avast to a better version (meaning paid)" or do you mean actual advvertisements that sometimes come on when you're loading some site or other. I've been getting those lately and wondering about them.
