I was in Best Buy and saw a number of Windows laptops with displays that were 12" or even smaller.
Most laptops have screens that are 14" or 15.6".
Why would people pay over $800 for a laptop with a 12" screen??
My only guess is that they often attach the laptop to a bigger screen.
I don't remember the makes and models but some were Microsoft Surfaces.
Many people (including myself) value portability/light weight machines, especially those (including myself, again) who travel nearly every week and have to lug the thing around. For me, however, an ipad pro fits the bill.
Ironically, my laptop is almost always connected to an external monitor.

Some people want more portability. Also some of the laptops are 2-in-1 tablet hybrids.
Screen size also isn't the end-all-be-all. There are other factors like resolution/pixel density, the panel, colors/contrast, etc. I'd rather have a good 12" display than an average 15" display.
And there's non-display components like build quality, keyboard/trackpad, ram, storage, processing power, etc.
Oh, Wow, >$800 in BestBuy!? My own new Acer Chromebook 311 is only $90 Online! While just below that threshold in Resolution screen width, doesn't feel overly small quite yet. Taiwanese Acer wins before Chinese made Lenovo, or especially even USA origins of Apple!? How can Apple be the worst from these three business tech companies is just an absolute shock to the system. Has to be at least equal value minimal.
Chromebooks do have some drawbacks. When I was taking college classes a few years back, the on-line programs would not play on a Chromebook and yet they would play on an old W7 PC.

Some people are satisfied driving a Honda and some people drive BMWs.
Everybody is different. As has been said, some people like smaller screens. Is it REALLY that hard to fathom?
Some people pay THOUSANDS of dollars for a laptop. One of my, if not the #1, least favorite posts on this forum is "Why do people spend so much on xxx"?

Different strokes for different folks.
The Microsoft Surface is about 12" and it's a hybrid between a tablet and a smartphone. You can remove the keyboard and use it as a tablet or attach the keyboard and put it on a desk and use it as a laptop.
You can pick it up with one hand and it's as powerful as many desktops.
They are designed for the ultimate in portability without a sacrifice in performance. Wouldn't be so portable if it was bigger and heavier.
If the screen seems to small for you, how do you feel about using a smartphone? I get around this problem by using reading glasses, lol.
I have a 12” screen laptop as I travel for business and find it a perfect fit for my requirements.
It is lighter and less bulkier than 14-15 inch units. When working from my home office, I use a laptop docking station with an external keyboard, mouse and a 22” monitor.
I shopped around for different brands when I purchased the unit and found this model was a fit for my needs.
Just because a $90 Chromebook is suitable for your needs doesn't mean the $800 laptop is a ripoff for everyone.
The $800 laptop has better hardware specs, a full operating system (Windows instead of Chrome), can run far more applications etc.
