I bought a new 2Gb flash drive (Ativa) and moved several folders with file to the drive. Then I did a mass move of individual files (highlighted them, then selected "move" to the flash drive.
After 51Mgs of files had been moved, I cannot move any more files to the drive. It acts as though I am out of space, but properties still show I have about 1.9Gbs free space.
So, I took out an older flash drive (1Gb San Disk), and copied some folders to it, then when I did a mass move of multiple files, the same thing happened, even though properties show I have about 550Mgs free.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I have to get these files copied today to a flash drive. I am on Vista, but also experienced same problem when I tried it on my laptop with XP.
The real question is how many files are we talking about here? Flash drives are usually formatted as FAT32 partitions, which have a limit on the number of files that can be stored in a directory. Your Vista machine will be using NTFS volumes, which has a limit, but practically speaking, you'll never hit it.

The files are not large, I believe the largest file was about 3.5Mgs, most are under 100Kb. I originally tried to move several hundered files at once, but then started breaking them up into chunks of about 20 files per move.
I estimated I didn't even have 500Mgs total of all files to move. But I cannot even move 1 50Kb file now. I just went out and bought a 4Gb flash drive to try to move the rest, but I'm fearful the same thing is going to happen. I've never had a problem moving files before, but then, I've never really had this many files to move.
Any other suggestions are most welcome, and I appreciate that you have taken the time to respond.
No. I was able to copy about 100 files & several folders to it before it stopped writing. I've never had a problem before, but as I said, I figured that perhaps it was the volume of files I was trying to move at a single shot that was problemmatical, but it still shouldn't run out of space.

So, can you change a flash drive to NTFS volumes? Or failing that, use more folders?
I've got 1.34GB on an 8GB flash drive formatted as FAT32. The OP shouldn't be having a problem unless they're copying a gazillion tiny files and passing some limit in FAT32.
agreatlife, where did you buy this flash drive? eBay by chance? If the answer is yes you definitely need to reformat it to see how big it really is...
