the windows installer box pops up often and states "preparing to install" and it doesnt say what its installing, and i hit cancel, but later it does it again.
i have tried to remove programs on my computer and it wont allow me, saying windows installer is incorrectly installed.
but how can i uninstall windows installer if it wont let me?
i have had this problem for a while and someone suggested doing run, msconfig, and look for the windows installer there, but i dont know which start up service is windows installer!
please help! i dont want to pay 60 bucks for Microsoft Windows support!
When the box pops up, don't do anything with it and go to the Task Manager. Under two tabs, Applications and Processes, see what's running. Make a note what the exe file is, then run a search for it and you'll find the exact path to its location in your computer.
In some instances I've not been able to delete the offending program but I was able to rename it. This may or may not work for you.

Corrupt file?
Since I haven't done it for a while give me some time (I may not get back until tomorrow on this) and I will look up the process for extracting this file from the cab file. That process should over write the current (corrupted?) file.
If this is the cause the problem should go away.
In the meantime you can do a little light reading...
