I am interviewing for various government-type jobs in the northeastern part of the state, centered primarily around the UConn/Storrs and Willimantic areas. I'm coming from central NY state, just to give you my frame of reference; I realize prices will be higher than what I'm accustomed to here.

Initially, I'd be renting, although if the job pans out I'd probably be selling my house here in NY and buying something in CT. I'm single and without kids, therefore schools are not an issue. I'll also have little time or inclination for outdoor maintenance, so a townhouse or condo would be my main interest. If I have to commute from the Hartford area, that would be OK -- although I'd like to be a bit closer to the areas I mentioned previously. I guess you could say that my main priorities are that my new location be (a) reasonably crime free and (b) not too dumpy.

Any suggestions on the best places to be looking for someone living on a public servant's salary? Thanks in advance.

A nice townhouse in Mansfield and Stafford can be had for about 150K-175K
that would be 2 bedrooms, garage etc.

In Vernon and South Windsor- just east of Hartford 170-185K for the same type of property.

As mentioned above, that area of the state is what we in CT consider to be downright inexpensive! There are many condo options around Mansfield due to UConn. Willimantic has some dumpy areas, so investigate neighborhoods carefully.

Skyhawk, if you rent, about what are you looking to pay? There may be an opportunity to rent a townhouse in Vernon--but it has 3 brs...may be too much space?

By Connecticut standards. But from where in Central New York state are you? I know that Cortland and Ithaca are still cheaper than eastern Connecticut.
