Renovating, Standard was my number two choice but they only offered me $2.65 per gall and $440 service plan! Any suggestions of getting the lower price? Where ther any extra fees? If you send me your name on as a private message, I'll use you as a referral, too. That is if I can get a great offer like yours!

Are you sure you understood correctly about the $440 service plan?...I have been a customer of Standard for eons...always get a service plan but never paid more than $225 (last year). No other extra fees. I lock in...I don't cap. I just happen to call on the right day...I network with friends about what the rates and specials are doing so we all help each other out and post the rates on another site...some locked in at 2.45....I missed that thinking they would go lower...I was wrong.

I have no idea why you would be quoted that amount for a service plan...but you are better off going with Santa at those rates.

We had Standard for years, they are an excellent company. They were very expensive for us though, we never got such a great offer as Renovating! We paid well over $250 a month for service plans, the last quote we got about 3 years ago was even higher. After seeing the above low rates I called to see what we might get, but they wanted $328 for an annual service plan. That includes our hot water tank which is oil-fired. Their current lock-in rate is 2.79, no cap. Prices are going up as we speak!

Just a word of caution to those who might be in the mood to bargain or wait for home heating oil:

September just ended and it was another very warm month (3. 3 F above at most area NWS stations across the Tri-State area). Atlantic Ocean sst are near 70 F just to the south of Connecticut. NOAA is expecting quite mild temps in the short term 90 day outlook (October, November, and December). October should see faily mild weather with a very slow cool down (days near 65/70 F – nights 45 to 50 F). Don’t let the fuel companies try to scare you with price increases.

My guess is prices will fall as we get into November due to mild weather in much of the USA. If the weather pattern shapes up the way many are expecting…I have feeling oil companies will be running scared come early December.

I have no idea why I got such a great deal on the service plan and mine also includes my hot water heater. I would never pay $300 for an annual plan either. My monthly rate has gone up a lot this winter as my usage last winter went up..monthly payments are calculated by gallons used x lock in rate.

You could be right...locking in is always a crap shoot...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Capping is the way to go if you can find a company that doesn't overcharge to do it!

I don't use any sort of locks or caps. I just buy the oil a the going price. The locks and caps are essentially hedge agreements and there is just as much chance of you losing money as there is of you gaining money.

I do the same thing; I used to be on the budget plan, but with our woodstove I can stretch a tank-full for a looong time. It came to the point where they were coming every month to deliver small amounts of fuel...
