Thanks a lot Jay for the info. I would prefer a sub urban location. I think Milford or Startford would be ideal for us if we want to make it work and in a long term one of us will try to make it work from home to stay away from travel.

I am essentially doing this split right now with my husband; we live in Bridgeport. He works in the Bronx, which is quicker to get to than many parts of NYC. He commutes completely on off hours and usually makes the drive in under 1 hour. However, it gets a LOT longer during rush hours-very easy to get stuck for hours on the road. And keep in mind that rush hour tends to last rather late.

My drive from Bridgeport to Hartford is a lot more consistent. In the morning, traffic goes fast and I can always make it in about an hour, going mostly on route 15 and then route 5. My leaving times vary from 6:30 am to 9 am, so I think I've seen a number of conditions and it is always a similar length. Coming home tends to be slower if I leave Hartford before ~ 7pm, but it doesn't usually take more than 1.5 hours.

Milford and Stratford are slightly north of Bridgeport, so a drive from there would be a bit shorter than mine (though I also live right by a highway entrance, which helps). Your wife will definitely have the worse commute if she is going to work at anything approximating normal hours.

Plus the commute from Waterbury to Hartford is not good. I-84 west of Hartford is probably the worst approach to the city. I would stay with living directly along the New Haven line. Jay
That's what I meant, the transfer happens at B-port.

If you prefer Suburban, I'd stay away from Bridgeport. Stratford, Milford and Fairfield are all good choices and still commutable by car to Hartford.
