Does anyone know if Whiting St (Plainville), and the area around it is safe?

My wife and myself are looking at condos for rent across from the post office, and we are not very familiar with the area. Some sections of town seem a bit rundown, while others have been nicely restored.

Thanks

It's an *ok* area* I live a few miles away in Farmington. If I were a 20-something single man, i would feel comfortable living there. Not the best place to raise a famil in my opinion.

Thanks. How about if your 20-something good looking wife was living there as well?

That's downtown Plainville, it's very safe, I don't think there's an unsafe area of Plainville. That area is pretty affordable housing part of the town, so make whatever conclusion you want from that.

Also, the police station is right around the corner, so cop cars come through that area a lot.

I know that area very well, and it is very safe as is all of Plainville. The only problem you might have is finding downtown Plainville to be a little too quiet.

One slight thing to be aware of is that there is an active freight train line directly behind those condos across from the Post Office. The train doesn't go by often, and it goes at basically a walking speed in that area because of road crossings, but it does make noise and will provide you with slight rumbling. Probably not a big deal, but the condo people might not tell you about it.

Thanks. I would rather have the downtown be quiet. I've lived in the Cheshire area for the past 2-3 years, so I know what quiet is.

Thanks for the info regarding the train.

That is probably my main concern. The condos we looked at were very nice and new, but right next door was a rundown apartment building.

I'm not trying to stereotype, as income does not determine a persons character, but living within an area with a decent concentration of lower income housing, near a bar, etc, gives me reservations. I don't worry so much about my own personal safety, as I do my wife's.

It's just so difficult in CT to find well kept rentals. Yes, there are complexes in Middletown and Manchester, but these are not as convenient location wise to our jobs in Bristol. The rentals in Southington are typically 100+ year old homes, that are either not well kept, or on the second or third level of a multi-family home. Most rentals in WH are a bit too close to the Hartford line. I've ruled out Bristol, as I don't like the area.

CTNomad,

I grew up in Plainville and know the area you're talking about. My grandmother's house was right around the corner. I would feel comfortable living there (I am a woman)- walking at night., etc. Plainville is a small town, mostly blue collar/working class. High school isn't great but elementary schools are OK. Crime isn't much of an issue in town. And yes, police station is right around the corner. I'd pick Plainville over much of Bristol - there are some nice areas but those don't have a lot of rentals.

Thank you for your input Jessica!
