What is the neighborhood like around Bradley Street and State Street near the interstate in New Haven? Is it a high crime area? I checked the police blotter but it wasn't very helpful.

We saw a couple of rentals that look promising. We are not from CT so all we can do for now is research and make some calls.

Thanks!

That is a great spot. Near lots of great food and a few good bars, as well as the East Rock/Whitney area. Lively enough and a good crowd of people. Like any part of the city, there will always be some crime - but that's generally a lower crime area.

Definitely a great spot, but quite near the highway and a busy offramp. You'll hear some noise - I live 5 blocks from 91 and we can hear background noise from the highway pretty much all the time, but have learned to block it out. The area, though, is fantastic - a lot of great things to do on State Street and close to downtown.

The biggest crime problems recently in East Rock have been car thefts, car break-ins, and small thefts from apartments/yards, especially bicycles. Other than that, as Stylo said, it is really not a high crime area.

That's awesome to know because we'll be there for just a few months since I'm doing research at Yale. We won't have a car so will probably walk everywhere. If it's a low crime area then I'm not as apprehensive to walk to Yale during the day. I saw photos of the rental places, they are right there near the highway. So that section is considered East Rock?

It depends on who you're asking. To me it's right on the border between East Rock and downtown.

If you'll be doing research at Yale and only staying for a few months, you might want to find a place closer to the Yale shuttle route (Transportation Options). It's very easy to get on a shuttle when it's dark out and get a safe ride back to your home if you live along the route. The orange and blue lines have stops at the medical and central campuses throughout the day.

As for walking, during the day you'll be fine, but I wouldn't recommend walking back to East Rock from the medical campus at night. You can walk back from central campus, but again, it's up to you how safe you feel doing so. I know people who are fine with it and people who won't walk alone after a certain time of night.

You both will be happy and fine there!
During the day you will feel completely safe walking all over and it is easy to walk to anywhere downtown. If you are working on the Yale New Haven Hospital side of downtown then it is a little farther. At night you are also fine, but you'll just learn the route you like to take and will probably feel better walking from the Whitney Av side onto Bradley. You are good either way and do not need to move anywhere else to be on a better bus route or walking distance.

Good spot.

How about the Quinnipiac Ave and Ferry Street area? Haven't been there in a while. Wondering if it got better or worse.
