My husband and I recently moved from DC to CT to be closer to our families. My husband works in Hartford and we are planning on purchasing a home in West Hartford. We have not yet found a house to buy and in the meantime, we are living with family and my husband is commuting from Danbury every day. We are looking for a short term rental apartment (4-6 months) in the Hartford area, ideally within West Hartford (although there seems to be little available there). Our requirements are:
-around $1600 / month
-cat friendly
-2 bedroom (we have a 2 year old)
-would like to be walkable to a town center
-safe building
-apartment building (as opposed to duplex or house)

So far, the only place that has responded to my calls, or has an opening is Brooksyde in WH, but based on reviews online about break-ins frequently occurring, I'm not really feeling that it's a safe place.

Does anyone know of apartments in the Hartford suburbs that have short term leases (or better yet, can anyone personally recommend one from experience)?
Many thanks!

Brooksyde Apartments are very nice, but they're small and expensive. The area is safe and close to downtown WH. I live close to those townhouse apartments and I wouldn't be there if it were a high-crime area. There was one smash & grab in the visitor lot of my complex last summer, and the person whose jeep was burglarized left their iPod in plain view on their car seat. I've lived here for years - this was the first time this happened at least in my complex. I read the police blotter weekly, and the cops are more likely to arrest drunken college students than they are for more serious crimes. I wouldn't pay too much attention to online reviews - people always use that as a place to vent and whine about inconveniences.

If you're looking strictly in WH, there's also a number of mid-rise apartment buildings on South Main St between Sedgwick and Farmington Avenues worth a look. They're basic apartments but they're really nice and also close walking distance to downtown. Whether or not they can provide a short-term rental I really don't know, but on the lawns there's usually a sign if there's a vacancy and a phone number. Also check the newspapers when you can.

One of these should easily be within your budget, but I can't guarantee there will be something available. There's also another complex managed by the same company that runs Brooksyde - Sedgwick & Woodrow St. apartments. There may be something available here & these are also close to alot.

Some of the larger complexes offer short term rentals. Gilette Ridge in Bloomfield says they offer short term rentals as do several complexes in Manchester. You might talk to an agent for help. Another option would be an extended stay hotel. Jay

Try the apartments on Loomis Drive that are managed by Udolf Properties. I believe they will do short term rentals and will also take a pet. And you'd be a quick walk to the Center, BBS.

Great information Amy. If I could rep you I would but the system says I need to spread the reps around. Jay

There are many more two and three family house type units available in WH. Why are you limiting yourself to an apartment complex?

My guess would be that apartment complexes are much more likely to do short term rentals than a multi family situation. Multi-family landlords typically want at least a 1-year lease so they don't need to constantly be looking for and screening new tenants.
