They were from Indy...suburbs.

It's pretty typical for CT to have access to everything but travel a few miles and feel like you are way out there. I'm on 2 acres, have deer, turkey, fishercats, coyote, fox etc but I'm less than 5 to the highway, downtown and farms.

CT is NOT light on cuisine. There is just about everything and anything you want here in some form.

I don't have much to say about whether Storrs Downtown is a "good" idea (economically? socially?) or not. However, not having a college town was one of the primary factors that led me to go to a midwestern Big Ten school instead of UConn right out of high school. Building up Willimantic would not have helped, as part of the point of a campus town is the walkability. Just my two cents.
