Pardon my naivete, but I'm looking for help making sense of the various electric utility options in West Hartford. We're moving in a week from California and I'm trying to get service started... but it seems like there are other options besides CL&P. I've never lived anywhere where there was more than one possible electric service. Besides CL&P I've also been seeing UI, Spark, and others. Can anyone explain to me how this works, and if they have recommendations for a service that's been reliable and reasonably priced? Thanks so much in advance!!

Ah, ok. I have done a bit of homework and read this Electric Deregulation In Connecticut. But I'm still curious if you folks have any thoughts on the two deliverers, CL&P vs. UI, in terms of reliability, and any opinions on specific suppliers would be great as well.

The merits of UI are irrelevant, as they only serve a small portion of the state nowhere near West Hartford, which is served by CL&P. As far as suppliers go, pick the one that appears to offer the best rate for you. Just remember to periodically monitor the rates of your current supplier vs. the competition.

Wallingford Electric here and I have nothing to complain about *smug*

But with other companies like UI I was shopping rates every 6 months or so to keep the cheapest. The only drawback is you still are paying all those extra fees, connections, and other items on your bill.
