This is my first spring in New England as an adult (cause we all know kids/teens don't appreciate these things quite as well) and I am truly in awe. The winter was harsh for my Florida blood, but the green grass, wildflowers and crisp sunshine are just taking my breath away. I went up to Bear Mountain a few weeks ago and highly recommend it as a great springtime hike; if you take the path to Sage's Ravine you will travel through a typical NE forest up to a mountaintop wetland and then through an evergreen canopy into a lush green evergreen forest carpeted with ferns, leading to an amazing display of endless waterfalls. Wow!

Now it's time for something new, and I'm looking for inspiration. I know there is a thread on hikes but where, specifically, would you go to best enjoy all these flowers? I also love waterfalls and any scramble during which I must not allow myself to look down! One day I must learn rock climbing but I'm not quite there yet...

Kaaterskilll Falls is on my list but I think it might yet be a bit chilly up there. I'd like to stay within an hour to an hour and a half from the greater Hartford area. Ideas? Inspiration?

Good Morning!!!!

Try the Botany Trail at Van Vleck Farm / Flanders Nature Center in Woodbury. Well maintained trails through wildflowers, ferns, flowering shrubs, trees. Walk through different terrain from meadows to more bottom land, hills, etc. Hundreds of acres overall.

Easy drive from Hartford and Woodbury is a great town to poke around after hiking or to have lunch/ dinner.

I don't think there are any waterfalls or running river streams, but the hike on Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, CT is very nice. There are plenty of trails (ranging from easy to difficult) to traverse on, and there is a nice little mini-castle/fort structure in the center of the park.

Check out Nature, Camping, Museum, Environmental Education - White Memorial Conservation Center, Litchfield, CT OR

DEEP: Topsmead State Forest.

Another great hike, just for the views and the tower at the top DEEP: Talcott Mountain State Park .

CT DEEP sponsors a letterboxing program that gets you out to a variety of state parks. I've been poking at it for two years now and have found some wonderful parks and some great drives by randomly pickig one and going for it.

The trails along the Saugatuck Reservoir in Redding are very relaxing and peaceful. For easy to slightly moderate hiking Devil's Den is a very short drive from the Saugatuck Reservoir.

Further north Kent Falls is very pretty and in the warmer months you will see people floating/standing in the base of the waterfall. Not much hiking there but it's a great place to cool off and enjoy the scenery. I'm also a fan of Mt. Tom State Park; the trails are easy and from the peak you can see out over the rolling hills.

It's a beautiful Spring walk, who cares about semantics.
