No recommendations for companies but would you be willing to tackle some projects? You don't need a green thumb, just an open ear and mind.

It might just be a matter of fertilizing, controlling, re-seeding. All it requires is a push seed spreader, a calendar, and bags of weed control and fertilizer. You'll be happy in a couple years from your own success and saving money

I just bought a $10 crabgrass sprayer. Never did it before. Tested an area last week and surprisingly it killed the crabgrass but not the grass so I'll be doing my whole yard for $10.

Got it. How about asking a neighbor who they use? Or better yet, drive around see who has a nice lawn and if the landscapers are there, get their card.

Default Lawn Care, what do I need to do?

Ok,

I will give it a try. I have a pretty big yard, i think around 9000 sq feet. Anyhow, we have lots of brown grass, and areas where there is just soil left over from when we had our septic removed and a sewer line put in. What do I need to do? Thanks in advance, and please spell out the steps like you are talking to a 5 year old, because I have a black thumb!

The growing season is almost over, and in another few weeks, it'll be prime time to fertilize and over-seed (basically a machine that aerates the grass and plants seeds into the ground). Most lawn guys can do it for a few hundred bucks - ask a few neighbors for recommendations. It's relatively easy work, but an overseeder is heavy and a pain to rent from HD or Lowes unless you have a truck.

Sorry, I don't. It's not hard work and you don't really need a high-end specialist or anything. Ask a neighbor or just stop and talk with the next lawn crew you see around.

A friend mentioned these guys, but might be a bit of an overkill based on their website - Tarantino Landscaping, Inc.

pretty simple: here are the newbie steps

1) Get a soil test....Logan Labs is the best. (4 inches below the surface of the lawn is the soil you want to test).
2) Remove thatch (apply seed on visible bare soil)
3) Buy elite perennial Ryegrass from Hart Seed in Wethersfield or Double Eagle from Home Depot. Do not buy annual rye. I would recommend Kentucky Bluegrass, but this type of turf takes a while to germinate so you wont have enough time. Perennial Ryegrass germinates much faster
4) Apply 5 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
5) Topdress seed with 1/8" of peat moss
6) Water lawn for 15 minutes 3 times a day for first 10 days
7) Around this point you will get your soil results from Logan Labs, post your test here and I will instruct you on how to amend the soil f necessary.
8) Buy Milorgranite...your lawn will thank you
