I just go to AAA for license renewals, but Waterbury isn't terrible if you go midweek.
The absolute worst DMV experience I have ever had was in Maryland. 7 hours on a weekday to transfer an out of state DL, no vehicle related transactions.
I find it really hard to believe that the average wait time is 53 minutes. That would imply that every 30 minute wait is balanced out by someone else's 90 minute wait.
The Norwalk DMV wait time is atrocious. It took 3 hours to register a car and transfer my out of state license, and that's with my having had all of the required paperwork in order. The line is usually out the door when I drive past, and many of the women who work inside work very slowly.
The time to go to the DMV is right when it opens. No line, no wait. Anytime later in the day, you are rolling the dice. Except for Bridgeport. There is never a reason to go to the DMV in Bridgeport. Ever. It is one of the circles of hell.
I spent almost an entire day at the Norwalk DMV to register a car that was transferred by a private party. From something like 10am to 3:30pm. It was a particularly horrible circle of hell. Shameful.
I've only been living in CT about 4 years and my license is up for renewal in 2015 but in NY, we were able to renew online. Can't do that in CT too?
Nope, you have to renew in person.
I went today to the Norwalk office to renew my driver's license and the entire process lasted slightly more than an hour, but I took a book with me which helped make the time seem to go much faster.
Apparently they are offering two types of license renewals, regular or verified. Supposedly in a few years civilians will have to show either their verified driver's license or verified state personal ID or a US passport in order to be allowed into a federal building. You need extra documents proving your identity and address and because of this I was not able to get the verified version. In my new license it says "not for federal identification."

Why didn't you just go to the AAA on High Ridge?
