My husband got a job offer in White Plains and we're trying to figure out which communities may be a good fit for our family. We're currently in a suburb of Boston & close to our families, which is nice. But, this move could be good for my husband career-wise. He'd be making a much higher salary, but with the higher cost of living in most Westchester/Fairfield communities, that may be a wash. We'd prefer a 3bd/2 ba, at least 1500 sq ft, at least 5,000 sq ft lot (what we have now), max $700K. Good schools, but not pressure cooker (have read that several towns are super-high pressure!). Good special ed is a must, as our 5 year old has global dyspraxia, SPD, speech and language disorders, and anxiety (luckily, seems like most in the area are well-regarded, but still trying to get specifics). In NY, I've seen some nice properties listed in Pleasantville, Katonah, and Croton-on-Hastings. In CT, Wilton and Ridgefield look really nice. My only concern about CT is the commute looks horrible, since there's really only 1 or 2 routes in. My husband's commute now is over an hour each way and I'd REALLY like to cut that down for him if possible!

Does anyone here commute from Ridgefield or Wilton? Also, schools appear to be excellent in both communities, but any comments on special ed services?

Thanks in advance!

North/Northwest Wilton and Ridgefield are not a bad commute, depending on where in town you are. You just shoot over to 684 from backroads and it's really easy. Ridgefield is an excellent option for a 684 commute.

Ridgefield is an easy commute to WP via 684. Schools are excellent - sorry that I have no info to offer regarding the special ed program though.

I also vote for Ridgefield. Only problem is 35 can be sluggish during peak hours.

See if you can find more info about Ridgefield. I personally believe Ridgefield has the best public schools in Connecticut, but regarding special ed, I'm not too sure. I imagine it's excellent, but, Ridgefield (High) is extremely competitive amongst its peers and last thing I want you to do is put your child in an excellent public education only to find out he feels pressured and left out. =(

Ridgefield as the other posters have suggested. Much easier to get to 684 than from Wilton.

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, I've heard from several sources that special ed in Ridgefield is "difficult" and "tough to navigate." Doesn't sound like it'd be a good fit. I have, however, heard good things about Wilton's sped. So, perhaps, as one of you said - a location in the northwest area of that town could be a good fit.

South Wilton could be ideal as well, the Belden Hill-Range Rd area. You get on the top of route 7 connector to merritt. Traffic on merritt would open up in stamford.

The Merritt has been especially unpleasant in the morning for awhile now, especially at the Rt. 7 interchange. I would suggest the Deforest/Cheese Spring Rd. area of Wilton, as it's pretty easy to take back roads to say High Ridge Rd(Exit 35) and get on the parkway there.
