I don't think it's #1 in test scores for any other reason than Weston being perhaps the most homogeneously wealthy town in the state. I'd guarantee that the quality of education is identical in Wilton or Westport.

This.

Everyone I talk to seems to think their schools are "#1 in the state". One say someone from Amity will say it, then a Ridgefield resident, then someone from Southbury. That's why I say elitism is alive and well in CT burbs, as is fierce competition about who has the better mailing address.

That goes on just about anywhere - you ask just about anybody in any town in the state and they'll say their town schools are terrific. (not counting the cities) Heck, I was talking to a woman from Wolcott last week and she loved the schools there and didn't want to move to nearby Southington or Cheshire because she liked the schools in Wolcott. (Her husband is a doctor, so it's not like they couldn't afford Southington or Cheshire) Yet, if you look at things like test scores, AP class availability in the high school, percentage of students going on to college, etc, Wolcott is middle of the pack, and not as good as Southington or Cheshire.

I might even say that the towns that generally come out near the top each year will have more parents that are nitpicking about education issues than in towns that are more middle of the pack (when I checked a few years back, Weston only offered a limited amount of Chinese as a world language in the high school, while nearby Westport starts Chinese as a world language in the middle schools)

Right. That's why I said "everyone".

But if Weston, Wilton and Westport school systems are all equally good and you get considerably more house (and land) for your money in Weston, wouldn't it make sense to consider it?

As long as you don't mind being in a more rural area that's a bit of a drive to conveniences, it's a great town.

I would not consider it cheaper than Wilton though?

We are looking in Weston, Westport and Easton. My husband is leaning more towards Weston & Easton.

Easton is a beautiful town! We looked there too, but found it a tad too rural for what we want. I believe Redding and Weston are similar! Westport, we looked at too, albeit briefly, but the home prices in that part of the area are outrageously high.

We are going to end up in Monroe, probably too far for you, but it seems like a wonderful middle class town.
