Finch Statement

Mayor Bill Finch on Saturday attended the ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the new Sports Authority store at 4543 Main Street in the Brookside Center near the Trumbull town line. In an appeal to suburbanites, the national sporting goods retailer describes the store as Sports Authority Trumbull according to its website. Hall of Famer Rich Gossage who pitched for the Yankees also attended.

“Bridgeport’s getting better every day,” says Finch in a statement. “Sports Authority opening their doors in our city is further proof that statement is true. It’s a great company that is creating jobs in the state’s largest city while helping to grow our economy. It’s also an endorsement of our city becoming a place where companies want to invest and hire people, and where families want to live, work and raise their families.”

It will last even less time than their store on Rt.1 in Milford lasted.

Too bad the owners of the former S&S site on Madison Ave. couldn't subdivide the space and bring in Sports Authority and a grocery store. That would have been a winner.

I thought Sports Authority was in trouble? And they're opening new stores?

Sounds kind of like the statement that he made when Food World reopened.

Why did Stop & Shop close the Madison Avenue store? I liked to shop there.

S&S cannibalized themselves. They renovated/expanded Villa(which drew Fairfield people back to it). They cleaned up the Trumbull store(which drew Trumbull people back to it). They built a new one in Monroe(which sucked out some of the Trumbull customers). After that, there weren't enough people to keep Madison and Main open.

The Villa Avenue store sucks. I now go to ShopRite because I refuse to go there. It is horribly run and never has enough checkout lanes open. I don't know why they built around 20 lanes when they never seem to have more than 2 or 3 open. I went to Madison Avenue to avoid Villa Avenue.

It's a shame that Stop & Shop ended up closing that store, after all the trouble they went to to open it.

I much prefer self-checkout. So, that rules out Fairfield ShopRite, as the operating family(Cingari) doesn't have self-checkout at any of their stores.

Employs 16,000 people and has Revenue of 3.65 Billion as of October. Graph shows a continued downtrend in $$. Who's taking their market share away or are people just not buying as much anymore. That's a pretty stead drop so I agree...why open more stores? Unless they see potential for the area?

Really? I hate self checkout. ShopRite checks me out fast enough that it's better than self checkout.

At the Villa Avenue store, the last straw for me was when the self checkout was broken so in addition to having practically no manned lanes open, it was impossible to use self checkout either. I haven't been back since.

At that store, they have constant problems with people walking out without paying for stuff. Even I would be tempted to steal from that store since they make it practically impossible to check out legitimately. And I'm the most law abiding guy around (other than speed limits, of course ).
