lol at 80,000 being the highest for Middle Class in Hartford county. I can see maybe 150,000 or something, but 80,000 is far too low.
In fact, the low is too high also. I know some people make the Middle Class too broad, but this definition just seems too narrow.

You also have to take into account what this salary is supporting.

I'm assuming that this is per person and not household total income.

Remember that Fairfield County includes towns in the Danbury area as well as the super-expensive portions of lower Fairfield County. That is quite a range. Still a family with an income of $103,000 per year would have a hard time buying a home and living there. I would think the range would be more up to $120,000. Jay

That's what I want to know. That makes a huge difference if the salary is supporting one person or a family of two, four, etc.

It said Household Income. It also said it is the range of the middle fifth of earners in the area. Very flawed.

And like others pointed out- you need to consider the number of people that the income has to support.
A single person in Htfd country of 50G will do fine. A family of 4 will live very, very modestly.

From the site:
Notes: Figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010-2012 American Community Survey in 2013 dollars. They reflect the household income of the middle fifth of residents in each county. Counties with populations greater than 20,000 are included.

Oops, I must have missed that. If that's HHI then I am well "above" middle class according to that site, which I truly don't think is the case.

A household making $100,000 would have lots of choices in Fairfield County. I used to be in the mortgage department of a bank before I went to art school so I will show you. I am going to give you and example of a nice little house in Trumbull on Edison Road. I picked this one because it is very similar to my cape. The family who owned the house before me was a family of 5.

389 Edison Road, Trumbull, CT 06611 (MLS# 99085942) - Trumbull CT Real Estate - ColdwellBankerMoves.com

$350,000 with 20% down ($70,000) = mortgage amount of $280,000 at 3.75%

If you use the calculator on the page you can see that with taxes of $6000 that comes to $1,800.

Here is a rough estimate on how we used to figure out what a person could afford.

With an income of $100,000 you have a monthly income of $8,333 (30% of the monthly income) = $2,499.

You can afford the house on Edison with $100,000 yearly income with room to spare.

I think your 2499 should be a 5833

Sorry, I worded it incorrectly. I am good at math but terrible at English.
