The ferry fills this role for 1% of the cost.

Did someone call us?

The Ferry is something like a 45 minute ride across from NL-Orient Point and BPT-PJ. Easy on, easy off, no driving, sit on the deck with a beer, relax, and enjoy the view. I would much rather take a ferry than drive 20 miles on a Bridge/Tunnel. Also your forgetting how much shipping takes place in The Sound with smaller container and fuel vessels and the vast number of barges that truck up and down all year round. Then there is the shellfish industry where farms and beds are laid out across the floor, so it would have to be a tunnel all the way.

We took the NL-OP ferry a few years back when we did the wine trail in LI, down one side and back up the other in two days. Came home with over 60 bottles of wine (not counting what we drank while there) and had a blast.

the NIMBY mentality is also in play here. at least as far as the rich people on the north shore of LI are concerned. they don't want extra traffic going through their neighborhoods. CT may not be screaming for it but LI'ers just plain don't want it.
i can say from personal experience though that it would have been nice to have that bridge. when i lived down there and came back here for the holidays, i had to drive all the way into NY, get on the Throgsneck, Cross Island, then either the Northern St Pkwy or the LIE to get to where i lived on the island. pain in the neck. took almost 3 hrs total..

The life of the privileged I guess. I forgot how wealthy the area is. lol

The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry takes longer than 45 minutes. It is actually like 75 minutes. Then there is the time you spend lining up and waiting to get on the ferry and the time you spend waiting to get off. Overall it is more like +2 hours. Another thing with the ferry is that they do fill up so during peak times you have to make a reservation in advance for a spot. It also is not cheap. For a car and driver it is $56 plus another $16 for each additional adult. You can buy a car plus unlimited number of passengers for $75, still not cheap. Sure you save on gas and tolls but those are not nearly that expensive. Jay

Yeah just slightly more inconvient than driving across a bridge. The reason that ferry even exists is due to the extreme traffic in nyc metro that you have to cut through to get to LI.

If the cost of the ferry is a problem, they could just subsidize it, which is again much cheaper than building a mega-bridge.

A meg-bridge would create thousands of jobs and looks better politically. How do you subsidize a private company? Not sure it can be done legally unless the state takes over the service like they did for the Connecticut River Ferries decades ago. Jay

Boeing
AmTrak
Healthcare providers
Farm subsidies
Private Universities
General Motors, et al
Solar and other energy companies

Yet the federal government continues to subsidize some of the biggest companies in America. Boeing, Xerox, IBM, Motorola, Dow Chemical, General Electric, and others have received millions in taxpayer-funded benefits through programs like the Advanced Technology Program and the Export-Import Bank.

This is getting off topic so I am not going to argue with you on this or try to explain further. Jay
