On interstates why? Doesnt a NJ taxpayer pay the same as a CT taxpayer for national interstates?

If you have a New Hampshire EZ Pass, you get a 30% discount at their tolls. That's what's velcro'd to my windshield. That's I-95, I-93, and Route 3. You don't need NH plates. You just need to have a NH transponder. This policy dates back to when you could buy a roll of toll tokens for 30%-off. Back in the day, most coin operated washing machines would take them.

Rhode Island has a local's discount for the Newport Bridge. $4.00 for the tourists. $0.83 for Rhode Island transponders. They also have a $40 per month unlimited use deal you can put on a RI transponder. I'm not sure if out-of-staters can get a RI transponder. Tolls | Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority

Similarly, there is a small discount on I-87/I-90 tolls in NY for those who have NYS Thruway transponders. I haven't had NY plates for more than 10 years, but opened my account when I lived there, so I get the discount.

Residents could be registering out of State to avoid CT property taxes.

I doubt it would be in any of those states though. New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts are not much cheaper than Connecticut for cars and Illinois, Ohio and Michigan are kind of far. Remember you do need a residence there to register a vehicle. Usually people doing this are using Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine. Jay

Yeah Ohio is far, but if you own property out there, or know someone then it's not difficult. Mind you I'M not condoning this. From my understanding MA car taxes are not as bad as ours.

It is not just taxes though. Registration fees also add to it. Connecticut's is lower than New Jersey and Massachusetts so when you combine them the total costs are different. Of course it depends on the vehicles as well. The registration fees are a set amount no matter the age or type of vehicle while the taxes depends on the value of the car which goes down with age. So if you have a newer more expensive vehicle in Connecticut it might be cheaper in those states but if you have an older, less expensive vehicle it is likely cheaper here. I believe it just balances out overall. Jay
