I am wondering...Would a daily commute from Glastonbury to East Haven be okay or too much? Our family is coming from Southern CA and we are used to commuting in traffic ; however, I wanted to ask this question as it might be a possibility.
It's not too bad. It is a long commute. Roughly an hour if no traffic and if there is traffic it would be another half an hour to your commute. The only issue is that you need to take Route 3 to cross the Connecticut River which is probably one of the only ways to cross the river from the east side of the river. You have Interstate 84, Interstate 291, Founders Bridge, and the Charter Oak Bridge but that's way out of your way. Interstate 91 isn't that bad during rush hour except Hartford which can be clogged starting from Wethersfield to Windsor. As for New Haven area, I would avoid the Q Bridge because of construction delays and daily rush hour traffic which isn't fun to be around. If you can get off at CT-80 (depending on where in East Haven it is) then that would be a better idea.
Thank you. We had our hearts set on living in Glastonbury, but a job might place us in East Haven for work. In terms of living, are there any surrounding towns near East Haven or even East Haven itself that we should consider? We have three small children, one in second grade and another in kindergarten this coming school year, so schools are important. Thus far, we have only really familiarized ourselves with Hartford County so I am not too families with the East Haven area.

Or even North Haven, or Northford. I would avoid East Haven itself simply because the school system there isn't all that great. With Northford or North Haven, or North Branford, you can get to East Haven without having to take any highway at all, via the back roads (which are actually the side roads). You'd have to deal with Rte 80 traffic and North High Street traffic, and both are a regular pain in the butt during rush hour. But they're mostly tolerable the rest of the time.
Staying west of the Connecticut river will make your commute to East Haven much easier. You might be used to lots of traffic in CA, but you need to keep in mind that we have ice and snow here, which can really make commuting a nightmare. The closer you live to your job the better. I agree with Funk: for great school systems in very nice towns near East Haven, definitely consider Madison, Guilford, or Branford. Best of luck!
FYI, the train (Shoreline East) does not have a stop in East Haven -- although I don't think that should affect your decision at all.
