This really bothers me. A state like North Carolina taxes something that you absolutely cannot avoid buying in order to live and yet Connecticut which does not tax grocery items because they are a necessity is called tax unfriendly. How does that make sense? Doesn't that place an unfair burden on people with lower incomes since they can't avoid paying that tax? Just stupid. I tried to find a way to question the writer of the article but they don't have email links on their website. Jay

You mean tolls Connecticut residents pay as they enter New York?

Without getting into the regressive taxation argument on taxing groceries, I would rather pay the relatively low tax on my food bill than what CT charges for the yearly auto tax and the extremely high real estate taxes.

There are toll roads all over New York, not just on I-95 in Westchester. Jay

People don't have to own a car but they do have to eat. Tax the things that people do not have to have, not the things you have to have in order to live. Jay

Again, I'm not making any argument for or against a tax on groceries, but for my- and most upper-middle class families probably- economic situation the tax burden in NC would be lower without a doubt.

As I have said here many time "The grass always LOOKS greener on the other side of the fence". Jay

Are you saying because there are no tolls we should pay a higher tax like gas?

Are you aware there are other states that dont have tolls that are not on the Top 10 list like CT is?

Met someone today who had Florida plates but been living in CT for yrs. Why? Cause its cheaper to keep it registered and insured down there... just like people from NY who dont switch over. Guess having no tolls is not enough sometimes that we still look for less expensive Avenues.

And not all residents would be using the toll roads anyway.

Where I live in CT my Aunt lives in Carmel NY area property tax is much cheaper there. Pay's less for car tax as well. Only tax that is high is gas and the interest rate for the morgatge is higher.
