The surrounding towns (Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Westport) have starter homes at the very top end of your budget, but more than likely, a starter home in those towns will be over the top end of your budget.

Up the line, Fairfield, Trumbull and Monroe are cheaper options, but these would require a commute on very congested highways. 95 and Merritt Parkway traffic can be downright horrific - think an hour to go less than 15 miles.

No love for Stratford ?

You'd be moving from a low cost-of-living area to really the second highest cost-of-living metro in the US.

Are you sure this is a smart move for you?

Unless you are moving for the job opportunity of a lifetime, I'd strongly advise against it, for a number of reasons, aside from the obvious (the degree to which your purchasing power will exponentially decrease relative to that of KC):

-Traffic is a freaking NIGHTMARE. You will hate life after a week of commuting within lower FFC. Even if you do take a position in NY, the 90 minute door to door (at a minimum) commute will get old fast.
-EVERYTHING is far more expensive. Gas prices are in the top 3. Groceries, utilities, etc are nuts. You even pay property tax on your car here.
-The people here are a VERY different breed. The midwestern friendliness you're presumably accustomed to will be sorely missed the first time you even do something as simple as take a trip to the grocery store (people in CT, especially lower-FFC, tend to lack the common courtesy to say 'excuse me' when trying to get around someone in an aisle, for example). Never mind the wacko liberal politics and road rage.

Again, short of an amazing opportunity, I'd recommend either staying in the midwest, or venturing to a more affordable area of the east coast. Norwalk is nothing special at all, and resale values are hindered by the subpar school district.

New Haven trains run more than twice an hour. What are you talking about? Most trains originate out of New Haven. Jay

This isn't some crap town in the south or mid-west. This is FFC, more specifically, Westport. If you can't understand that, move on, because anything between 750-1m in this town makes you middle of the pack, bud. Anything below 750k, and you might as well move out.

Btw, we own a 1m+ home and it has oil heat and its beautiful. Who cares about oil heat?

You are talking off peak. I am talking peak when there are a lot more. The only reason Stamford has so many it includes the ones running from New Haven as well. Metro North is sending all the trains into Manhattan in preparation to bring commuters back from the city. You really don't need so many during these hours anyway. Jay

The amount of trains leaving New Haven in the afternoon has nothing to do with the OP's request...
