No, it was part of Fairfield. The line used to be Park Avenue. Everything to the west was Fairfield, everything to the east was Stratford. Bridgeport was carved out of the two towns back about 200 years ago. Jay

I doubt that this secession will go anywhere, however the question is: Would Fairfield take Black Rock back? It's definitely a great neighborhood of Bridgeport.

In a heartbeat, they would be licking their chops and approving one teardown and rebuild permit after the other, more waterfront prop tax revenue.

North Stamford has been trying to secede for a quarter century now.

To quote the NY Times article:

According to Mr. Bartucca, the last time a part of one town in the state became a separate entity was in 1921 when the eastern section of Orange became the town of West Haven. Before that, in 1889, Ansonia broke away from Derby and, in 1885, Thomaston, an industrial section of predominantly rural Plymouth split to become a municipality. "But in all of those cases, it seems to have been mutually agreed upon," Mr. Bartucca said.

Sounds about right. Unfortunately, I doubt that Bridgeport will let Black Rock leave that easily. It has to be one of the cash cows for the city with respect to tax revenue. Definitely a good scenario though.

They can easily secede by getting up and moving. I just don't understand people who move somewhere but can't bring themselves to admit they live in that place. I've seen people from East Norwalk desperately insist they live in Westport and people in Rowayton try to disassociate from Norwalk. Now this.

Rowayton tried secession a couple of times years ago or be absorbed into Darien. Both towns laughed them off. Living in East Norwalk for 20+ years I never heard the Westport thing from anyone though.

NJ went through this more than a century ago. It was called boroughitis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boroughitis). Some of these boroughs have nonsensical names (e.g., Ho-Ho-Kus) and take 10 minutes to traverse by foot.
