Renting or buying? Budget? Will you be staying long enough to need good schools? What do you prefer? Rural, suburban, vibrant/walkable?

The plan is rent a year and look to buy if we are happy in Hartford. Trying to stay under $1500 a month in an effort to be able to put more away monthly for a down payment. The main goal here is to be in a safe neighborhood and not create a terrible commute to Rocky Hill. Schools and ammenties I'll consider heavily when I buy in, but for this rental I'm flexible.

Start by looking in Rocky Hill itself. There are a number of apartment complexes there. You could also look at Cromwell and the Westfield section of Middletown. All would be very convenient to your job. Jay

Middletown is a nice place to rent and is cheap. Gives you a great homebase to explore the state and discover what town fits you best.

Cromwell, Rocky hill, Newington, most of Wethersfield and parts of Middletown, would all work well. Maybe Berlin as well. $1500 will get a decent 2 bedroom apartment in that area. You may also find some condos for rent in that price range and 2-3 family house setups.

Update on the housing search, found a real nice 2 story 2 bedroom SFH home with a 2 car garage and a big yard for $1,500 a month in Plainville. My job as I said is in Rocky Hill. I mapped it with Google a couple times during normal hours and rush hour and it doesn't appear like I'll have much trouble, it's only 13 miles (72 to 9 then briefly on 91 North) and the only congestion it showed was briefly getting on 91 for a mile to get off at my job, but there are ways around that. I'm very excited to make the move (departing FL next Thursday 6/22). Any pitfalls I'm missing on this commute?

No that commute is fine. There will be occasional slow downs where 9 meets 72 and 91 as mentioned but nothing major. Plenty of surface st for alternate routes as well.

No, you will be fine, plenty of alternative side roads to get you around any backups in that area. Good luck with the move and welcome!

Plainville to Rocky Hill? There will be no backups. Route 72, Route 9 and I-91 all move pretty well even during the height of rush hour. Jay

Yeah as everybody said Plainville to Rocky Hill shouldn't be an issue at all.
