Hey Guys and Gals,

There's a rumor going around my company that they are going to start having employees work out of their Stamford HQ. So I'm going to move from NJ to CT. Looking for advice on towns. My friend lives in meridan and says it's alright over there but I'm not happy with the school reviews. Here are my needs

1. Inclusive area- My wife is half italian half PR. You wouldn't know that unless you knew her and my kids got her skin tone. I'm extremely tired of being stared at in NJ as if I kidnapped my kids

2. quiet suburby area preferably 3 bedroom - My wife is from south jersey and living in bayonne was a drastic change for her. She prefers to not have constant police sirens going off

3. decent schools

4. Affordable rent - I am the sole provider currently and am not looking to pay rent and struggle. I can probably do 1400- 1500

Not Necessary - if the area has spectrum I can get free internet and cable if not well I'll continue paying the competition.

$1500ish won't get you much, maybe a mediocre studio or 1br, in Stamford and the immediate area. Even up the line in Fairfield and Milford, it won't get you much.

You might want to look at the Danbury area (Bethel) or the Valley area (Shelton, Seymour). Keep in mind, commuting from these areas means traffic, and lots of it.

Stratford, Shelton, Milford is possible

$1500 for 3 bedrooms with good schools, low crime that hard in CT

3 beds for 1500 isnt happening closer to Stamford regardless of schools. You'll be spending you're life with a miserable commute. Fingers crossed the rumor is false.

Meriden is pretty far from Stamford and there are many other towns that are a lot closer that you could consider. As kidyankee noted, your budget is low for Stamford area. Unfortunately Stamford is smack dab in the middle of some of the priciest communities in the country so living near it on a limited budget will be difficult. Traffic is a nightmare into Stamford so depending where the office is, you might want to consider commuting by train from towns along the New Haven line of Metro North Railroad. You will have to balance your commute against what your budget will get you.

As was noted Stamford itself is pricey and there would be little there in your price range. You might then start in Norwalk but at your budget, there won't be much either.

Next would be Bridgeport which is a big city but does have some nice areas you might want to consider. Look at the North End (north of North Avenue and west of Main Street) or Black Rock (west of Ellsworth Street). The schools struggle though.

Stratford could be another option. The schools are decent and there might be a place of two in your price range. The only thing is that to avoid the Bayonne-type area you mentioned, you might want to stay away from the Bridgeport border south of Route 1.

Then would come Milford but again as was noted, there may not be much to consider there. Another option would be West Haven which now has a station on Metro North. Schools there are okay. Again, just how long of a commute can you tolerate? Jay

Here is something you might want to try. Trumbull has some apartments called "The Royce". They used to be Avalon apartments. I have just become aware that they have set aside some apartments that go by your income. You might want to see if you can get one of those or see how often the apartments with the income cap open up. Trumbull has very good schools so I am sure those apartments go fast.

If you scroll down that page the most recent reviews are 4 or 5 out of 5 stars.

Here is another website with 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Not true if they can take the train to work.

A train commute further up the line to Stamford is super easy.

At that point I would look at Milford, Stratford, Shelton.

I'd nix Norwalk as a consideration, as it's so expensive and an affordable 3-BR for your budget will put you in a sketchy neighborhood or apartment, and wouldn't consider Bridgeport. The schools there are not "decent". Personally I wouldn't consider the Danbury area unless a car commute is required. Train access is not as good as New Haven line, and it's a long car commute.
