This is the man I would like to see as the Governor but I don't know how CT could eliminate the state income tax at this point. I would guess CT would have to raise the sales tax and that is very regressive.

Here is the question.....would you like to see the income tax eliminated and how does CT make up for it?
And for those who remember....... what did CT do before the income tax to pay for government?

It would never pass. Impossible to balance the budget without it, unless he slashed basically every service we have right now.

I like Boughton but this is unrealistic.

It's actually not that hard. You never cut it off immediately. Successful implementation is about phasing it out. Or phasing in lower taxes.

But you just can't do it on its own. It has be a comprehensive plan, for example -- welfare reform, pension reform, less regulatory burden, and so on.

But putting CT on the road to recovery would attract taxpayers and businesses.

Something's gotta give.

Remember the last time someone said they would elimate the state income tax? *cough* Rowland *cough*. How did that go? People vote with their feet and he knows people are angry about their taxes but this is highly unlikely that this will become a reality. Our budget relies too much on our state income tax. I believe it's close to half? This will only lead to more debt since a VERY large percentage of our budget goes towards pensions because we didn't find them correctly for decades. It would only be possible if public unions didn't exist in this state, to be honest. Many state employees are overpaid, receive free healthcare (for many, not all), and free tuition for their children. It costs the state too much money.

That was a brief article so maybe some things were taken out of context. All I got from it was he's another student of supply side economics ie Reaganomics and that doesn't work.

This statement is especially misleading,

"Boughton’s proposal would have Connecticut residents keeping as much as seven percent of their annual income, instead of putting it in the state’s coffers."

Only the people in the top income tax bracket would save 7%. He's implying that all tax payers could save up to 7%.

Maybe its a poor choice of words, or the reporter wrote it down wrong, but I would love to read the entire interview unedited.

In end it doesn't really matter though, since if you eliminate 50%-60% of your tax revenue you have to make it up somewhere else. And its simply not possible to recover that type of loss.

Ditch the IT and raise ST to 9 or 10%. Handouts and services are already bloated and do more to enable than help. I always think back (like an old person of 36) as to how we ever survived years ago without these complex systems and services.
