Reading the treads, came upon a tread about car taxes. What is a car tax and why and what locales have them?

Personal property taxes (car taxes) are assessed for each vehicle owned or leased while it resides in Connecticut. Each of the 169 cities/towns in Connecticut levies this tax. They are coming due very shortly (07/01/2008).

For example, I paid $466.16 last July for my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500.

Yes, for my new Altima (CT registered) I paid about $340 and that's with a small tax break from my municipality for driving a Hybrid. Most communities I believe do not offer these breaks because it's a loss of revenue for each town.

Some. For example, non-essential foods (candy, soda) are subject to Connecticut's 6-percent sales tax.

You will pay personal property tax on your vehicles to the town you choose to reside in. The taxes run ,as another posted said, July to July.
Each town updates their "Grand List", which is a list of personal property getting taxed in the fall. If you move between towns between yearly updates, you will pay prorated taxes to each town. Our counties do not tax anyone on anything, it is done by towns and cities. This personal property tax also applies to motorcycles, campers, boats, trailers, etc. Basically anything that needs to be registered.

Income tax and state sales taxes are state level only, no county, or city income taxes .

Essential clothing up to $75 per item is not taxed, if you choose to buy an expensive coat for the winter, above $75 in price, then you will pay tax on the full price of the coat. Accessories are considered non essential, and are taxed. The last few years, we have been having a tax free week for back to school (usually the 3rd week of August), when the taxes on clothing are lifted for higher priced essential clothing (free for items up to $300 per item). So that would be the time to get those expensive coats and boots.

It's actually $50.00 per item, except during the tax-free week.

That tax-free week always has me laughing, you see people interviewed at places like Wal-Mart with bulging bags of clothing, bragging over how much money they are saving. Most people don't realize it's per item, they think it's a whole shopping trip up to $300.00. I don't think that tax-free week really benefits low to middle income families, other than the sales stores have celebrating it.
