Hi,
Which beach is your favourite beach & why?

What is the beach culture? Is it a big part of peoples lives?

Do kids do surf lifesaving? Called Nippers here in Australia.

Whats the water temperature in summer?

Thanks.

West Beach in Stamford, due to its proximity to my residence and being the nicest of the bunch.

Not a big part of most people's lives, but for many young people it certainly is... during the Summer.

I've never heard of this until now, so my guess is no.

Warm enough to swim in it, but cool enough to not feel like an open air bathtub filled with warm water. Having said that, it's been a long time since I swam in Long Island Sound, and by the looks of things, that will be my last time. The beaches here are great for socializing, sunbathing, etc; not so much for swimming or doing much of anything in the water, IMO.

You are looking for Rhode Island beaches.

CT beaches are very docile being attached to Long Island Sound.

Connecticut's beaches cannot be compared to those in Australia. The beaches here are rocky, calm and laid-back. Not many water sports going on. I agree that you may want to look into Rhode Island (Narragansett), the Jersey Shore, or Long Island (Montauk Point is surfer's paradise).

Thanks PP's!

Antonio84, do you not swim because the water is polluted?

I have been googling the beaches & can see pics of lots of people on the sand & not many in the water. I was wondering if this is because of the water temperature or pollution.

& Yes I know they're nothing like Australian beaches.

They aren't polluted, there is just a lot of seaweed and shells. The water isn't crystal clear, either. The temperature much of the year is cold as well.

Keep in mind Sydneybeach, that the Long Island Sound (which all of the CT coast is, it does not empty out into the ocean until RI), while salt water and an inlet to the ocean, will not have beaches with the waves, large tidal differences, etc. of ocean beaches, so it's not really comparable, it's more like "lagoon" type beaches than "ocean" type beaches.

While the Sound does have a history of pollution, it has improved a lot in the last 2 decades and it's very rare if ever now that swimming is banned for any period (though closing for sewage issues, etc. was always much more common as you went west on the Sound into New York anyways, I remember back in the 80s and 90s the NY Sound beaches closing a lot for this but not the CT ones so much).

Long Island Sound is an estuary, a combination of salt and fresh water. It has unique qualities that benefit the marine life that inhabits its waters.

I discovered the West Shores Beach in West Haven a few years ago and find it to be one of the nicer large beaches in Connecticut. It has approximately 4 miles of beach that you can walk and enjoy.
