If I may interrupt this thread for a minute...anyone else think it's a shame that this is what our youth are all about now?

There is so much more to life and college than this.

I just think it's important that people reading this thread do not the wrong impression about UConn. From some of the posts here, one might assume that the vast majority of UConn students are heavy drinking, hardcore drug users. Then one might assume that a large number of UConn students thereby do not even graduate, and any who do might end up as alcoholics and drug addicts. I don't think that's a fair image for UConn, it's a very good school. My dd was accepted there, but chose a smaller college instead. And where she is now, she can't even put her drink down, because the college is having problems with boys dropping drugs into the girl's drinks. I can't believe the horror stories I've been hearing about colleges the past few years.

I had a dear friend graduate from UCONN with a 5th of whiskey a day habit. Finding faith and AA, he's straightened out and is now working for Pfizer in NYC doing okay. I was with him through a lot of the recover and it sucked on both ends.

True, and I said in my first post that UConn is a great school with a ton of opportunities. If you want to stay away from the drinking/partying culture there, you can. As I said before, UConn has a rather "immature" party factor that other schools don't have - think a wannabe fratboy with a backpack full of booze smashing each beer bottle as he finishes it. That's not to say that other schools don't party, but they party more quietly than they do at UConn. I know MANY kids who took the party life too seriously at UConn and had to transfer to one of the four state schools for a more relaxed environment.

I just don't understand how MetsNY can use words such as "tame" and compare it to other schools that are 1/15th the size of UConn.

And regarding your daughter make sure not only does she not put her drink down, but if she's holding it, to always keep it right in front of her and not look away. And tell her to be careful which bar she does to - bartenders can be scum, as well.

Honestly JViello, this has been going on for a LONG time. It is no different than when I went to school or even the generations before me. It may just be publicized a bit more. We had Spring Weekend too and it was insane and would rival anything that UConn has. Really, it is no different. Jay

I was going to say them same thing…about 30 posts back, but figured I get an argument from someone.

Every generation think that “their generation” are the big partiers…when the truth is its not different today than it was 15 or 45 years ago. I can remember spring break in the early 1980’s when everyone would converge in Ft/ Lauderdale…and it was crazy (drunken people, fights, people falling off balconies, people staggering into traffic, people getting drunk on the beach and falling asleep under the southern sun (and frying to a crisp), the cops cracking heads when they had enough…etc). At that was child’s play…compared to the way the hippies partied in the 1960’s/1970’s ( remember Woodstock lol). In the 1940’s/1950’s Yale and Harvard had some of the most unruly (for the day) parties and craziness of them all. The New Haven Police busted up Yale Frat parties in the 1920's.

The people and the places change…but the theme never will.

It wouldn't surprise me - although I do think it's getting a little worse. I don't think they had the idea of putting date rape drugs in girls drinks and actually following through with it in your day or having "live pornos" taped in dorm rooms by by actual porn film industy people. Maybe, but I would think not.

I don't think this is anything "new" meaning in the last 20 years but that it has been coming for the last 75 years or so slowly like a drip but really came on in the 60's.

And I wrote that before reading this.

I doubt the "yale" parties in 1920 were at the extreme level and/or as common as they are today.

During Prohibition they were still pretty bad. Liquor was against the law then but so many people were drinking anyway, the law was virtually useless. Of course I was not there to verify this. Jay
