It doesn't require the special paper, and allows you to just use a regular note pad, so I hope that it works out. I will definitely report back when he gets to try it out, as the reviews are mixed as to how accurate the conversion to text is (as a previous poster pointed out) which appears to be an issue with all the pens out there that do this sort of thing. But, overall this one seemed to get the best reviews of all those out there...maybe I should get him a penmanship book too?
+1 vote for the Lightscribe. I write like a 4 year old, and it works really well for me.
I think you mean the Livescribe? That is the one we saw at Best Buy and he didn't like that it couldn't convert handwriting directly into a Word Document. You can convert it to a text document and then import it, but you run into a lot of problems that way. A major downside is having to use the special notebooks. When I researched complaints for all the pens, this one by far had the most but I really wanted to like it! It appears that Livescribe works best if you want to keep your notes handwritten and then you have the backup of the recording to go back to if something doesn't make sense. But, to me, I would rather just write out my notes and scan it to my computer than to depend on an electronic pen to do that. Seems a little counterproductive to take pages of notes on the special paper only to have to spend time to ensure that the pen didn't miss something...
Just an update...the Logipen has worked out very well. It converted handwriting very nicely and like others have pointed out, the handwriting conversion to text has some opportunities but surprisingly not many for how terrible his handwriting can be! I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who wants a digital pen. This one had the least investment involved - no special paper, no special ink cartridges or batteries.
