I have a flat screen/smart TV, about 2 or 3 years old.

We have Dir TV.

When I change channels, it lags, a LOT, before it will change to the new channel. I would guess maybe there is a 3 to 4 second delay of just nothingness, black screen, and then it changes to the new channel. But this is every time, even if I enter the numbers for the channel I want to watch.

Would this be a problem with my TV or a problem with the Dir TV?

It could be a lot of things. What resolution is your TV compared to the setting on the Dir TV?
Are you using (1)HDMI cable, (2)composite cables Red, White yellow, or (3) component : 5 cables - 3 video and 2 audio?

Here is some advice on three techniques to fix the problem such as defragmenting the hard drive.

Have you tried to use your TV with some OTA channels to see what happens?

Is this a recent problem or has it always been like this for 2-3 years?

Thanks for the replies. I wish I could remember how long this has been going on, it has been quite a while. I will have to get one of my daughters to maybe look at the things advised here. I have no idea how it's hooked up or to what cables. I guess I shouldn't of asked the question without the technical know-how to troubleshoot.

I can remember someone talking about this back when they were using a VCR. They said it was always faster to change the channels through the VCR, but I never understood why.

Is it a Vizio, Sharp or other low priced hd-tv, if so that's common for them to have a slow response switching time with cable services.

I have a Vizio TV and when I had DirecTV, I did notice a lag when I changed channels. Sometimes it would take as long as five seconds before it would change. I never tried to do anything about it. I just assumed it had something to do with the DirecTV TV DVR. However, I noticed that I have a similar problem with the Tivo as well.

There is a lag because Directv and DISH have multiple satellites [DISH west arc has 110, 119, 129]. When you switch channels and it is on another sat, the LNB switch has to change to that different sat and get the transponder. When the channels are on the same sat, there usually isn't a delay. And the signal is travelling 22,000 miles.
