My 14 year old sony tv in my study seems to be done. It has a white screen, sound works but not picture. From reading it seems like its time to replace it not repair it. I sit 13 to 16 feet from the screen. Current screen is roughly 35 in diagonal, looking at ones larger, 50 in diagonal. Big price difference in UHD vs 1080 models. I'm planning on a 1080 model smart tv. Any thoughts for me on why not some other version?
Heck, this same 4K TV is offered at dell.com for $649 PLUS you get a $200 Dell e-gift certificate ... so it's practically the same price as the 1080p model.

The price difference is often as little as $100 now in 55" or smaller televisions. Be sure and get 1080p instead of 1080i. Usually 1080i are marketed as 720p (which is an alternate viewing mode).
One can argue that 1080p is not important as all broadcast is done in 1080i/720p. But it is probably worth it because of alternative sources like Blu-rays or Full High Definition streaming.
In a similar way you may not think 4K is worth it because there is not a lot of material. But 4K has only been around for four years, whereas your new TV will probably be with you for at least 7 years. If you haven't got the $100 then don't get the higher resolution, but it might not hurt to plan ahead.
I generally think that for $500 or less you might as well get a Smart TV (consider one with a built in Roku). But for more expensive models, consider getting the Smart portion as a separate box or stick. That way you can upgrade or replace just the "smart" portion.

I am seeing them for $1000 more not $4000 more. I do not see them worth even that amount for my needs but am I missing something?
4K is type of TV. not a $4000 price difference. The actual price difference between a 1080p and 4k (2160p) is small and for me it would be a no-brainer to go with a 4k. If you don't care about high definition to begin with and will never take advantage of the better picture quality go with the lower priced option. I figure that if I'm replacing something I might as well take a step up. So for me, if I already have a 1080p the natural choice would be a 4k. I would also go up in size. For the OP, if you are replacing a CRT (tube) TV than a 1080p is a step up.
Thanks, everyone, Went with a Samsung 55 in with 4k. Bought it at Costco for just over $600. Havent installed it yet but like the size and good experience Ive had with other Samsung TVs
