If a soft, undetailed and severely cropped video is your idea of beautiful, whatever floats your boat. If you want to experience a movie as close as you can to the original film, you need Blu ray and widescreen TV.
If you are concerned about the age of the tapes, get a DVD-R/VCR combo and transfer the tapes to DVD
There have been 10 on the market but I think only 3 are still being sold. But they are probably available on E-Bay.

But a few things. The ones I first got were refurbished units. They were inexpensive (under $100) but they were limited to DVD's under 8X and their timers/clocks weren't worth squat. Of the pair I bought probably in 2006 or so, the first one is showing it's age and was pulled from converting work about three months ago.
A good thing about these older machines is that they did come with a tuner. Most of my "modern" machines don't have tuners or coaxial cable inputs. So how did I take off TV if these units had poor timers? Stuck a 6-8 hour tape in and let it record the entire range the show was expected to be in.
Another problem with the older machines is that for SLP on the tape to SLP on the DVD produces an extremely poor quality DVD. The modern machines, however, produce a decent DVD when it is viewed on computer with VLC media player. Not quite sure of the quality when the DVD is played on TV because I am not making the DVDs to play there. Further, there is another problem in that stuff that was recorded in the past doesn't always come up the best when shown on a big flat screen.
So what are the disadvantages of the modern machines? First of all, it is cost. They run about $250 apiece. Secondly, as mentioned, they usually don't come with a tuner. They may have a timer, but they have to be hooked up to something else with a tuner.

I'm totally new when it comes to VCR and VideoCassette technology, but here's the story:
There was this concert i recorded on TV with this new videocassette i bought (it says i can record 8 hours), but when i saw it stopped at 2 hours and 40 minutes.
I look behind the case of the V.C, and behind it stated:
I wanted to record 8hrs, but instead it recorded 2hrs and 40 minutes only.
Can anyone help me on this?
Modes means the tape is going to be moving at a faster or slower speed as it is playing or recording. Granted, though, the picture quality is going to be better when you are recording at a faster speed than a slower one, just like with the old reel-to-reel tapes sounded better when recording at a faster speed. That's why commercial (prerecorded) video tapes are going to play on SP mode, and the old commercial reel tapes used to play at 7-1/2 inches per second rather than, say 3-3/4 IPS.
