Yeah...Google and Facebook information stating incorrectly that it's opening per its open hours information. A FB post stated check for a soft opening this month.

The Blue Rooster Canteen has a pastry chef who is phenomenal. The owner told me he's a retired pastry chef from Chicago who recently moved to Cookeville, and we can all be grateful for that. Besides delicious pastries, his baguettes are just about the most authentic I've had since moving back from France a few years ago.

It looks like a new Greek restaurant is coming to town. I didn't have time to stop, but I saw a place called Rhodes on Willow Ave just south of the RR tracks. It had a big Greek flag in front. I can't find any info about it.

I finally was able to check out Damascus Taste, a Middle Eastern restaurant in the little strip mall next to Sonic on Jefferson. I had the beef gyro and my friend had the lamb kebab. Both were excellent. It also has some grocery products (cookies, drinks, spices, etc.) from Turkey. The owners are super friendly, too.
Thanks for the info on the restaurants. We definitely will try Damascus Taste while we are up for our home closing. Will probably have to wait on the Blue Pig until the opening crowds thin out. Blue Rooster will be on our list once we get all moved in. We like Greek food also, so if one is coming in, a thumbs up from us.

We don't go our to eat all the time, but when we do we like to mostly go to restaurants that are not chains. We have a lot to choose from where we currently are living and it appears that we will not miss a beat by moving to Cookeville.

I'm with you on eating at non-chain restaurants. It's fun to see how Cookeville has grown up in that regard. While there are plenty if chain restaurants in town, the whole downtown area, especially the Westside / Depot area, has some wonderful places.

Non-chain restaurants in the Westside / Depot area (the epicenter for local eateries):

Back Room Bistro
Blue Pig (not open yet)
Blue Rooster Canteen (take out only)
Charity's Bake Shop and Café
Crawdaddy's West Side Grill
Cream City Ice Cream and Coffee House
El Milagro Market and Restaurant
Father Tom's Pub
Hix Farm Brewery (not open yet)
India Palace
Mauricio's Italian Restaurant
Mealfit (take out only)
P-Dilly's Cupcakes
Ralph's Doughnuts
Red Silo Brewing Company
Seven Senses Food and Cheer
Taiko Noodles and Sushi Bar
World Foods

Non-chain restaurants in the eastern half of downtown:

A Taste of the Philippines
Big O Doughnuts
Bobby Q's
Char Steak Lounge
Cooke House
Early Birds Bakery
Gearheads
Great Harvest (yes it's a chain, but it doesn't act like it)
Kathey's Kakes (bakery and catering)
Mamma Rosa's
Moogie's BBQ
Poet's Coffee (2 locations downtown)
Yardbirds Food Truck

Non-chain restaurants just north of downtown, around the university:

A Taste of China
Bravo Cafe and Grill
House of Thai
Kneaded Together Bakery
Ocha
Rice Time Bistro
San Antonio Taco Company (sort of a chain, only one other location in Nashville)
Spankies
The Cue
Tienda Guadalupana
Vinnie T's Sports Bar

And some others I can think of scattered around town:

19th Hole Club House
20 Degrees Frozen Yogurt Lounge
Algood City Diner
Anchor Down
China Wok
Cookeville Boat Dock's Lighthouse Restaurant
Cinco Amigos
Currie's Indian Kitchen (take out only)
Damascus Taste
Dipsy Doodle
El Tapatio (2 locations)
Family Traditions Cafe
Fiesta Cancun Grill (2 locations)
Fuji Hibachi and Sushi
El Magueyal
Gondola House
Grandma's Pancake House
Hooligan's Half Irish Pub
Jig Head Brewing Company (not open yet)
Kero's Cafe
Little Kobe
M&M Country Cafe
Maddie's Place
Miniburger
Nick's Restaurant and Lounge
Panaderia Guatemex
Panda Garden
Pharaoh's Grill
Pueblo Viejo
Rhodes: Greek Island Foods (just opened, no web site yet)
Sakura Hibachi Express
Stroud's Barbeque
Super Hibachi Grill and Buffet
Taqueria La Mulita Express (just opened, no web site)
The Turn Around Juice Bar
Village Kitchen
Wooly's Club House

There's an article in today's paper about Jig Head Brewing Company. It sounds like a fun place, although I still wish it were located in downtown instead of down by the interstate off of Willow.

I finally got to try the new Greek restaurant, Rhodes. It was great. The owner is Greek/Egyptian and also owns a Mediterranean bakery/grocery in Nashville, so all the pastries and breads are homemade. For only $5.99 I got a plate of grilled shaved beef with homemade tzatziki sauce, seasoned rice, salad, and warmed pita (again, homemade). They don't have a Facebook page yet but should within the next week or so. It's at 56 South Willow, just south of the RR bridge between Broad and Spring.

It looks like the city is finally going to take steps to allow food trucks to use city-owned property, specifically by Dogwood Park, Cane Creek Park, and Cane Creek Sportsplex/Recreation Center. There are currently six food trucks in Cookeville that would like to do this. I think this is a good move.

There's a nice article in the Upper Cumberland Business Journal about The Blue Pig smokehouse and oyster bar which is opening soon. One new thing not mentioned earlier: The Blue Pig will also feature a beer garden which will open later this spring.

Located in the same block as Seven Senses, The Back Room Bistro, Crawdaddy's, and P-Dilly's, The Blue Pig will be a welcomed addition to downtown Cookeville's WestSide.
