Hello again
I'm trying to research Cookeville employers. Not beng there & just reading names online doesn't always make for the best research. If it's a local company that I have never heard of doesn't mean it's not a large or good employer.

I am aware of TTU & Oreck but I wonder about others. Someone recently told me about Averitt. Anyone know anything about them ? I do have some background in the trucking industry.

What other employers might one consider & be able to research a little on line ? If they have a website, feel free to pm me. I am currently in auto sales which I could always do anywhere. Anyone know about the car market there ? I spent 15 years in the furniture rent to own business. Any options there ? My spouse works in restaurant management. Usually bigger chains like Applebee's, Texas Road House, etc...

Again, any help would be appreciated.

The hospital is the largest employer in Cookeville, something like 1,400 employees. As far as manufacturers, there aren't many large factories in Cookeville (one of the reasons I like it there). Fleetguard is the only one listed with the state of Tennessee that employs more than 500. It's a division of Cummins engines.

I think Tutco employs around 400. Oreck should employ more than 500 once it's fully operational.

There's a colossal chicken processing plant in nearby Monterey, I think it employs something like 1,800 people. The plant is colossal, not the chickens. haha

Averitt Express is a gigantic trucking company that's based in Cookeville. They have several hundred at their headquarters and have announced their intentions to expand by another 400 or so in the next year or two. They're building a huge new building on Old Kentucky Road. If you go to their web site they list a few dozen job openings in Cookeville including truck drivers.

There are several new car dealerships in Cookeville and several furniture rental businesses. Have you done a yellow pages search for some?

The big restaurant chains are in Cookeville: Applebee's, Cheddar's, Chili's, Logan's Roadhouse, Red Lobster, O'Charley's, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, 8 Subways, 4 McDonald's, 3 Sonics, and just this week Longhorn Steaks announced they're coming as well as TGI Friday's, Panera, Olive Garden, and Buffalo Wild Wings. No shortage of restaurant jobs.

Hope this helps. Good luck! It's a wonderful community with a lot to offer.

Fleetguard changed their name to Cummins Filtration last year. From everything I have seen, this is a great place to work.

I have several friends who work there at Cummins Filtration in Cookeville and absolutely LOVE it. They're nervous that the whole operation will eventually be moved to Mexico, but I suppose most any factory in America is like that. I believe Cummins has spent a few million dollars upgrading their Cookeville plant, so I think it's there to stay.

I hope so...They've been saying that about Fleetguard for years but I know they've put some money in it recently.
I don't know about the white collar jobs at Cummins but I know the line jobs can be kindof hard to get.Very little turnover. Most everybody that starts there retires there which is a good sign.
**rto, they do move a lot cars in Cookeville & Sparta.I'm sure you could do well at that here if that's what you wanted to do.
With you & you're spouse's work experience I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a good job pretty quickly in Cookeville.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping after a few days, maybe some more readers might have some other options that I can check out.

I will be coming alone to Cookeville to scope things out, find a place & secure employment. I don't really want to get anything big yet until I get situated & get the family there.

Anyone have any receommendations as to some reasonable temporary housing that won't require a long term committment ?

From the December 2006 issue of the Cumberland Business Journal (the monthly business newspaper for the Cookeville area), here are the top employers in Cookeville:

Tennessee Tech, 3000 employees
Perdue Farms, 2100 employees (it's in nearby Monterey)
Cookeville Regional Medical Center, 1600 employees
Averitt Express, 760 employees
Cummins Filtration, 750 employees
Tutco, 500 employees

Some of the companies in Cookeville other than Oreck and Averitt Express who have announced large expansions that you might want to check out:

Automation Tool Company
Dacco
Fixtur World
MP Components

On another note, I am a sucker for auctions. Any auction houses in the area with weekly sales ?

Averitt is definitely one of the companies that I am interested in.

I have a large variety of skills, so I'm not as worried about finding a job as I am finding some sort of reasonable temporary housing until I get the family there.

If I can find a bed & a shower, I'm in. That will be all I need until I can get situated. I think a motel will probably cost me way more than I want to spend but I may have to do that.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone has a good idea.

In addition, I saw an advertisement for a position at the Garden Hotel on S. Jefferson. Anyone have any knowledge of this facility ?
