My wife and I are planning a quick trip to the area in April.-probably for a week or so. Will be spending a couple days in San Antonio and then driving to Corpus Christi-staying for two or three days. I'm pretty familiar with TX-stationed there in 70's for 18 months or so (Ft. Hood). But I've not visited Corpus Christi. Looking for advice from the locals for the "must sees".

Also, and perhaps a bit off topic here, but while checking out flight options I've discovered it's really much less expensive to fly into (and out of) Austin than SA. Anyone know why? In our case, we'll be flying from/to Sacramento, so there's no direct flights to or from either SA or Austin.

Thanks for responses.

The Bayfront is really nice (off of I-37, along Ocean Drive). Going out to The Island, and along the National Seashore is always alot of fun.. nice beaches there too. There is actually quite alot to do in the area; perhaps you could be more specific about the activities you two would like to take on?

As far as flights go, my guess would be that you are dealing with much larger airports in SA and Austin. There are alot more flight options to those airports, over the smaller airport at Corpus.

Thanks Ian. After reading your response and then reviewing my posted thread I see that I could have been clearer regarding the "flight" question. My point is that it's much cheaper to fly into Austin than to San Antonio. I wonder if there's a reason for that. Perhaps there are just fewer flights to SA for example.

Our plans are to fly to either SA or Austin and rent a car, then make a loop that will include CC before returning to the airport to fly home.

My wife and I are interested in visited museums, historical sites, in some cases art galleries, downtown brewpubs, and generally getting a quick "feel" for the places we visit. Beaches aren't incredibly important, though piers/wharves with fresh seafood are always on our list.
Thanks again,
John

John,

CC is a bit thin on museums, art galleries, and brewpubs. Our beaches and sunny weather are our biggest draw for the tourist. April may be a bit early for the attractions in SA,,, Sea World and Fiesta Texas are pretty much summer time things. Although the River Walk is always a treat, and the Alamo is always open.

Austin is probably more in tune with your interests as there are several micro-brewpubs located on the main drag and a lot of Texas history at your fingertips.

Welcome to Texas.

Thanks jbtx. Yeah, I figured it'd be a bit early for beach related activities. But April fits our relatively busy work schedules. I've spent a fair amount of time in and around Austin-albeit 35 years ago! But I only spent day trips in San Antonio. I've read about the aquarium in CC and of course the USS Lexington. Are those worth visiting? I'd also like to travel up to Shiner for the brewery, Gonzalez for the history and Lockhart for the barbecue. Greuene Hall in New Braunfels is on the list as well. Come to think of it, a week might be pushing it.

I'm heading there myself in 2 or 3 weeks (from AZ) and when I was trying to figure out costs/flights...etc, I also noticed the price issue and how much cheaper it would be just to drive. I've called airlines even regarding that point as it doesn't seem to matter what time of year you travel, nor how long in advance you plan. The cost difference is so different that we are in fact flying in to Dallas, then driving down.

I've been looking online for things to do as well, there is of course the USS Lexington, and down in that same vacinity is the museum district which includes the Harbor Playhouse Theatre, Museum of Science and History, Institue for the Arts and the Museum of Asian Cultures. And lastly the Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. Not much, sorry, but I'm looking forward to it.

The reason flying into Corpus itself is so much more expensive is because there are only two destinations CC connects to, Dallas and Houston, via only three airlines, Southwest, United, or American. For a region its size, CC has horrible flight options, and would be cheaper to drive to SA or Houston and fly out from there.

oldfashionedcountrygirl, you might want to try seeing how the price would be flying into San Antonio, Austin, or Houston. Dallas is over a six hour drive, closer to seven, to Corpus Christi.

This may have gotten a bit off track with some other TX airports. I was seeking an answer to why it is much less expensive to fly to Austin, than to San Antonio. Anyone know? Are there simply more flights into/out of Austin?

It seems to be the main hub in Tx and it does show me a lot more flights in and out versus San Antonio.
