I read somewhere that a bill is being proposed that will give cruisers from the US more rights in suing and it will also regulate the safety and inspections of ships that leave from our ports.
This, for a change, is not a Carnival owned line (I believe). It's a UK based, Thomson cruise ship.

Evidently, during a drill, a lifeboat fell and killed 5 people. Another 3 were injured.
Perhaps we are approaching a time in which ships, especially cruise ships, require better international safety regulation and inspections.
That news is over a month old, it happened right after the Triumph. Thompson doesn't sail into US waters, ever, so no US laws could possibly apply to them.

Thank you. I just heard it on the radio.
I know some ships do not dock in the US, but I have the feeling that a lot of people are fed up with all of these safety infringements and may be fed up with the cruise industry. It's reassuring that there are some elected officials who are trying to protect US citizens and in the long run, bolster up our opinion of the cruise industry.
As we have seen in most industries, self regulation does not work. They need oversight.
I've sailed on both foreign and "domestic" lines and have felt safest on the smaller ships. I believe that there will eventually be a tragedy on one of those super-large ships because they simply won't be able to get everyone off in time.

I guess being fed up is why most of the cruise ships go out full every sailing???!!!
What you heard on the radio was an attempt at sensationalism reporting. 24/7 news brings a lot of things, good and bad to the serfice and if they can find the bad they will tell us over and over.
