I am interested in a charter boat for family and friends (4-6 people) on the east coast. We would prefer a crewed sailboat, but motor-boat is an option. Don't need a large boat, just something for a family. In spite of my efforts, I wasn't able to understand how much it can roughly cost. I am looking between 3-7 days, in September. The route is along the east coast - NY - Boston - Maine.
A sailboat large enough for 6 people plus a crew for a week is not a small sailboat
You have to search on-line for the area you want, look for a charter company, and then call them with your list of things you want and what week it is and they will give you a price quote.
Plan on it being expensive, and then double that since you appear to want one-way.

I thought someone on the forum may have some experience with such sailing. But you are probably right. I am just curious what the average cost for such trip may be. For some reason, all websites avoid publishing their price-list, or they are talking of large groups (250 people) with extras, like scuba diving and on board parties. That's not what I am looking for. My interest is a taste of bare bone sailing. Also most advertising is for the Bahamas, Caribbeans, or Australia's blue riff.
Anyway, I will follow your advice. Thanks.
I would guess around $5K for a week, which might include a captain but probably no one else (i.e.: you provision and cook).
That at least puts you in the ballpark. A one-way deal would probably add $1,500 to the cost.
And yes, a sailboat for 6 people -- at least a 50-foot yacht would be needed -- is pretty small. I spent 10 days on one in the Caribbean and loved it, but it's close quarters.

our daughter and son in law did something similar in the Caribbean about a year ago. It was only for 2 people and I am guessing, knowing them, it was a lot more than 5 grand, but 5 would be a min % .
Depends on the season. Off-season rates (late summer, in the Caribbean) can be as much as 50% cheaper. If you get lucky and avoid hurricanes, it can be a fantastic bargain.

I would agree; like cruises, there are a few times a year when prices are bargains. Our daughter and her hubby did theirs in early March.
How carved in stone is that NY - Boston - Maine itinerary as you could probably rent a houseboat and cruise the 1000 islands area of upstate NY ,advantages being you crew and pilot the boat yourself , you go where you want to go, no rough seas. https://www.google.ca/#q=houseboat+r...ds&safe=active.
Or you could think of an actual cruise probably a bit pricey but i would think it would be a lot more comfortable than a little sailboat out on the ocean. http://www.stlawrencerivercruise.com....cfm?page=ship
Have done it a couple times in Thailand. Once on a Chinese junk, the other on a catamaran. Both were crewed charters. Both times came out to around $800-1000 per day. Would imagine it costing a little more in the US.
