One reason why religious fanatics are extremely dangerous to the future of the human race is that they expect their rewards in Heaven and aren't motivated to preserve life on Earth. Therefore they're much more likely than other groups to use weapons of mass destruction to destroy the entire human race.

Whatever we think of ISIS now, it's nothing compared to what we might face in the future, when more advanced technology makes future weapons of mass destruction more widely available.

The odds that the human race will survive this problem over the long run are probably less than even.

Default Why is the current middle-eastern ****storm being allowed to continue?

It looks like this could be over with in a matter of weeks if the countries surrounding them all advanced on them at the same time and killed anyone with a gun in their hand. Why isn't it happening?

It "isn't happening" because this is what the middle east has been all about for the past 10,000 years. ISIS isn't something new or different; it's just the most recent manifestation of the mindless butchery that's so deeply imbedded in their DNA. This is who they are and that's what they do.

It's none of our business. They won't stop because we think they should and if we step into that sewer, it'll only make us stink.

Let it bleed.

I'm fairly certain ISIS has more than 20k members. What I wish, though, would for the western media as a whole completely STOP reporting on anything that's happening in the region - or if they feel that they can't, make it non-sensationalistic backpage news no matter how bad it really is. Much of the crap that goes on over there is meant to get our attention - if we ignore it, much of it will go away.

If the West would finally completely change how it consumes energy and drugs the region would become completely insignificant and many of the problems would simply go away. On the other hand, I suppose a sudden complete change would throw the region into poverty and probably spark a massive population migration toward Europe.

Because none of the leaders of developed countries are prepared to wage total war against extremism...yet.

The problem with the "leave it alone" strategy is that it is only a matter of time before they (the extremists) get their hands on some REAL SERIOUS weapons. And those REAL SERIOUS weapons may not stay in the Middle East.

I don't like getting involved any more than anyone else. But this kind of stuff can get out of hand and over the ocean.

But, still, the various Islamic run states need to handle this. Now! We need to put big pressure wherever we can to get this thing stopped.
But what our government will do is give big support to some counties, not big pressure like they should.

Did everyone forget the OP question ? It wasn't what to do about it but why it's allowed to continue.

For a variety of reasons...not the least of which is that we (at least in America) have made back room promises to our corporations that operate in hostile areas that we "have their back" but are not willing to permanently destroy the threat.

Agreed. These flks aren't made from the same DNA as, for example, we in the west. They will stop at nothing, even if it takes 1,000 years, to take control of the world. The "locals" simply accept radicals as part of their way of life, and aren't about to step in to stop what we perceive as carnage.

It is allowed to continue because there is no "quick" way to stop it. And no one wants to man up and alter the balance of power/or the map in that part of the world.

I am admittedly a hawk on this issue. Send the memo on Monday: You have to Wednesday to cough up the 'bad guys' (someone always knows which side of the fence their neighbor falls on), and get yourself into a safe zone. On Thursday we will be eliminating anything which is left, starting at the West end of the Mediterranean and ending at the western border of Pakistan. You will be able to ice skate on the sand glass from the sea to India. The territory will become ours; the oil will become ours; and anyone not falling into line will be promptly disposed of.

Quite frankly, I am sick of being "nice" at the cost of American lives which are protecting what? Oil? Take the damned oil if that is what it is, and get it over with. There is no honor in death by a thousand cuts.
