The article's reasoning is like saying that since more people die in car crashes than from jumping off of tall buildings, driving is more deadly than jumping off tall buildings. A lot more people smoke cigarettes than take heroin.

This

If one could buy crystal meth or heroin at the gas station for 6 bucks, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it would literally destroy our society. People will point at countries with red lite districts, or decriminalization, but it's not the same thing. Making such drugs that readily available like alcohol and tobacco are would be a disaster.

Marijuana isn't harmless like many see to believe, but it's definitely safer than alcohol. I think making it as available as alcohol would definitely have negative effects on society, but it's completely hypocritical to make it illegal. It's been legalized here in WA, and every stoner I know wishes that they would have just decriminalized it. Now we got all these nasty marijuana laws, that people somehow didn't see coming. The big one is that people are finally starting to get DUI's for weed, which sucks for those that smoke because 90% of us drive while stoned lol

Agreed I’m sure if coke, meth or crack etc was hanging on a peg hook at the local Stop and Rob people would be dropping like flies.

If their being deadly correlates to their being legal, as the article states, then the "finding" has little merit.

No, it's more like saying, "Half a million deaths are acceptable but 0 deaths are not".

There are 1.9 million cocaine users in the US. There are 42.1 million cigarette smokers in the US. If 480 thousand people die from cigarettes and 4641 cocaine deaths occur then cigarettes are 4-5 times more deadly than cocaine. I realize there are many variables that go into this such as the fact that smoking kills you after many years and there are less smokers now then there were in the past, so the number of deaths should go down in the future. However, I would still say that typical cigarette use is more deadly than typical cocaine use.

I favor legalizing all of the popular recreation drugs and selling them through state owned stores like New Hampshire sells hard alcohol. The profits could support rehab to the buyers that become addicted. This would not destroy all of society but would devastate the profits of the criminal sector.
