Others have been fined about $20,000. I think that is about right.
I think that's a little bit light. It's gotta hurt. Mommy and Daddy can easily come up with the 20K. Make it more like $50,000 each, and maybe a month or two in jail in addition.
I think it is a mistake to not disclose their names and hometowns.
Then send info to hometown newspaper.
From the newspaper it will quickly be picked up by Facebook and other social media.
Public shame is more likely to deter future acts of vandalism.
I also believe a criminals should get at least a taste of what jail looks like.
Too many deferred sentences or probation.
A few days/weeks in jail is good reality therapy.
You mean to tell me that two young, California women didnt think it was disrespectul to carve their names into a piece of ancient history? You dont say! Im shocked!!!!
And they just as easily could have been from Arizona.
I went to the 9/11 Memorial in October, talk about an eye opener into bad behavior, and most of it was from younger people.
More than once I saw security guards having to tell people to get off the names memorial as their a**es were sitting on the names, to not hang over the fountain and text, and many taking selfies and grinning, do they not know people were murdered on this site.
I kept think how horrible it would be for a family member to come here and see such a lack of respect.
It's a sign of the times, not limited to one state.

It is not a sign of the times, things like what you have described and the USA tourists damaging the Colosseum have been occurring for thousands of years, so please let us stop pretending that this is something new.
It is a little bit odd that you're upset with people for not acting how you think they should be acting.
I can see wanting to take some sand, in a vial, from there, even a pebble or something. But not leaving marks. (Sigh) people don't think very deep these days.

People have been continually vandalizing the Colosseum for 2,000 years.
