Thanks for the information, so 5 white officers and 1 black? I can't help but wonder if the video had shown 3 black officers instead of white, if it would be all over the news and all of the protestors out marching.
No, it wouldn't. Also something you see even on CNN is that at least half of the National Guardsmen and Baltimore Police are black. So it's not 100% white vs. all the black people of Baltimore. This isn't the same as Ferguson, as Missouri does not have the historic black population that Maryland does. Baltimore has had a very strong and large black community for years.
This is another hyped up event. But really the police need to be accountable for what they do to those in custody. This could have happened to any repeat offender who the police choose to brutalize, just because they could, and they thought they could get away with it.
Yes it would still be all over the news if all six officers were black.
Not likely. The media want the racial angle. None of the highly publicized incidents so far have involved only black officers, even though statistically we know that they are no less likely to mistreat black suspects than are white cops.
Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr., 45, who has been on the force since 1999, according to Baltimore police. An African American, Goodson drove the van that transported Gray to jail.
Lt. Brian W. Rice, 41, the highest-ranking officer among those charged Friday, is a 17-year veteran of the department.
Officer William G. Porter, 25, who joined the force in 2012, became involved in Gray’s arrest after Goodson requested backup as he was driving to central booking, Mosby said. Held on $350,000 bail, Porter faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Porter, who is black, checked on Gray and asked him whether he needed medical assistance.
Sgt. Alicia D. White, 30, joined the force in 2010. She was dispatched to investigate two citizens’ complaints abut Gray’s arrest. At one point, according to Mosby, she “spoke to the back of his head,”even though Gray was unresponsive. White, who is African American, grew up in Baltimore, Gross said, and went to the University of Maryland’s Eastern Shore campus.
Officer Edward M. Nero, 29, who joined the force in 2012, was on bike patrol with Rice and another officer when they chased Gray. Nero, who is white, is charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. He is being held on $250,000 bail.
Officer Garrett E. Miller is charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.
as a matter of fact, knowing that 3 of the cops are black, I am still glad that it received national attention, because the victim is black. otherwise these crooked cops may have never faced justice. nobody should want crooked, abusive cops on the street, regardless of color.
Yes it would still be all over the news if all six officers were black. Freddie would still be dead and police brutality would still be the issue because the problem is with cops, not just white cops.
3 are Black and 3 are White.
The UK site showed their pictures.
No need to speculate.
If they were all White you betcha they'd be plastered all over US MSM sites.
I think the race of the officers is irrelevant. The problem is that the uniform becomes more important than any perceived racial connections. In the end, Black police officers tend to engage in the same race-based assumptions about Black civilians as do White officers. The racism is systemic, and is intertwined with socioeconomic class distinctions. Essentially, us-against-them ceases to be a Black vs. White issue, and becomes a police vs. civilians issue. In a city, or a country, in which economic disparity is concentrated in the Black population, it is young Black males who experience the brunt of police violence.
Here's an interview with David Simon, creator of The Wire, concerning the history of Baltimore's police/civilian interaction:
If they were all White you betcha they'd be plastered all over US MSM sites.
Word. I"m in the DC area and the MSM here very, very conveniently didn't show pictures of the 6 officers on TV reports. We all know why that is. People's heads will explode if they discover the racial truth.
