Cuba removed from US terror list

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration on Friday formally removed Cuba from a U.S. terrorism blacklist as part of the process of normalizing relations between the Cold War foes.

Cuba removed from US terror list
Do you think Congress should revoke the embargo?

Do you think Congress will do it, or do some in congress exert too much power to let it happen?

It's been such a roaring success for 50 years, why not keep going? Surely that regime will topple any day now.

Yes.

Isn't it funny how we trade with countries that are much more hostile with us and have much worse human rights violations, yet we continue to embargo Cuba.

My guess is that if Cuba did a better job lobbying US companies to provide cheap labor, suddenly, they would be ok to trade with again.

When it comes to politics, follow the money.

Agree. But they also have a strong pro-embargo lobby in south florida.

But the populace is no longer pro-embargo. The vast majority of Cubans in Miami-Dade think the embargo has not worked well, and a slight majority prefer lifting it to continuing it. And the overwhelmingly support normalized relations between the U.S. and Cuba.

Polls show support for embargo, Cuba hardline is in minority | Miami Herald Miami Herald

However, it should be noted that the subset of Cubans in Florida who vote in Republican primaries are pro-embargo - those who support lifting it skew Democratic. This result keeps Republicans toeing the pro-embargo line, for if you don't win your primary you don't even have a chance in a general election.

And that's how the minority of Cubans who support the embargo manage to project their political influence.
