After reading about this I am convinced the prosecution felt challenged that he didn't take a plea deal like most other people and was determined to hold him in prison until a plea deal was reached.

That is sad, and over a backpack! How did they possibly hold him for so long? There is so,etching seriously wrong with the justice system in New York City.

You can only be held without a trial if the president thinks you're an enemy combatant. I didn't hear that applied to this person. He wasn't at Guantanamo.
